quick question but I've read that lemmy federates with both mastodon and peertube (I have checked and can find myself here: https://mastodon.social/@Scraft161@iusearchlinux.fyi but I am unable to see any users from mastodon or peertube.

Search failing on lemmy:
Screenshot of a search for "@torvalds@social.kernel.org" returning nothing

Same search on mastodon.social:
Screenshot of the same search successfully returning the user's profile

Is there something I'm doing wrong or has federation not been implemented both ways as of yet?

EDIT: minor formatting regarding images

You can't follow people, only groups. It is not planned atm for lemmy, because then you would need a different feed for users and their pots.

yeah, I noticed lemmy doesn't support self posts (posts to your account instead of a community) and there is no follow option for users on lemmy (even though these feeds exist on mastodon). I might head over to their GH and properly see if they have an open issue/discussion about this because it only really feels natural for this to exist if two way federation with other platforms is desired.

I am loving lemmy from a purely technical perspective and I would love to see it get better and have full federation with these platforms.

Mastodon is implementing groups I think which should be able to be followed from lemmy, I think. That would be cool.

if so that would open up one part of federation that makes sense to lemmy, it would be a great first step to see federation go the other way; but I also believe lemmy should step up it's game if it wants to be proper part of the fediverse.

There's no way for you to follow a Fediverse account from Lemmy, at this time; however, as you know, it does work the other way around.

are there any plans for this? I had a quick look around the GH and I couldn't really find anything conclusive.

Sorry, I don't know. 😕 There is a Lemmy-like project called kbin which has that ability, from what I've read others say, but it's not as mature as Lemmy (which still has several rough edges). I don't speak from experience though -- I haven't checked it out yet.

I've looked at kbin, but things take a long time to federate through to it. it's still early days for it (same for lemmy, but kbin doesn't feel nearly as mature) and if I'm going to migrate to another fediverse platform it might as well be mastodon :/

Yeah, kbin.social has been getting slammed and they've had to increase server capacity to handle the load. I'm sure their federation issues will get sorted out.

it'd be real nice if federation just worked (I actually don't know if I can see kbin magazines here on lemmy) so we'd actually be on the fediverse instead of in a bubble where people can see in and interact; but we can't really see out.

Hey im on Kbin, can you see my comment?

[–] Scraft161@iusearchlinux.fyi 1 points 2 years ago

yes; but this isn't the part of federation that I'm talking about. Cross-platform commenting has been pretty well figured out by the fediverse community. What I am talking about is being able to see toots from mastodon, videos from peertube, posts (not comments) from kbin and being able to have that in a single feed here on Lemmy.
