The US media NBC's broadcast screen showed that the US team ranked first in the medal table. The U.S. team has 3 gold medals, 15 silver and 13 bronze medals. The number of gold medals is not the first, and the number of medals is not the first. Why can they rank first? It turned out that NBC excluded the diving event and listed swimming separately, and it was not counting the number of gold medals, but the number of medals, and finally succeeded in making the United States rank first.

Reminds me of when NYT tweeted a picture of gold medals per country, and they shrunk the pics of China's medals. Possibly to make the gap less noticeable?

Why would NBC show less USA gold medals than reality? I feel like these are taken at different times or refer to slightly different things?

Because if combining category, China has 20 golds compared to 5, US 4 golds. How can US get 1st place then.

That’s silly, they could sort the final medal table you show there by total medal count to make US #1 too
