First of all: My main issue was the photographing of a kid without obvious consent. The racism, as I said in the first post, is only the "garnishment."
But still, its there. On a sub line. And Im willing to believe that the author isnt aware of the possibilty to interpret it this way. Its kinda nice, that you dont see this issue too. You have kinda "freed" yourself from this point of view. But on the other hand, you should be aware, that some poeple, with diferent bias, see things different. And if a right wing author would have posted this online, you would've thought about the post diferent too, I assume.
I dont want to write a detailed analysis of the picture to frame out every issue in detail and combined and write every possible interprations down, but I try to summarize it.
In this picture, a Kid, read as an Asian originated 13 year old boy, is photograhed. Obviously without clear consent. This is humilating for the kid and you could see this as an act of showing off power to him. He is quiet young and still has to work in the family bussines to keep it running. The family is very likely to be in need for customers, so he to needs to act as an servant and is unlikely to stand up for himself. The kid looks kinda nerdy and fulffills this way the cliche of the dilligent Kid from an asian family. The author isnt picturized, but the caption is in english and uses some kind of slang of the white majority for the offered food.
Or in short terms: A white person in power is humilating a servant, looking like a cliche-asian-kid.
Do you see it now?
Yeah, its all a interpretation. But the picture is either playing with this assumptions or is at least tolerating them. If you want to do this joke without this ... stale aftertaste(?), you have to set frame different
You can often see the same picture in diferent ways. A well excuted joke is playing the diferent bias and point of views. I dont accuse the author to be a racist. Its think its just insensitive and unaware. Probably my coment(s) are leading to some thoughts and some kind of reflection. And if the author in the end decides its still a good joke, fair enough. There a lot more shitty "comedians" out there. I wont mind.
Yeah sure. Could be. But on the other hand, you felt the urge to coment too. I could ask you the same question.
Its an assumption the picture is sugesting. A small, unpolished family bussines, where the kids have to work in after school to keep it running. If this business fails, the family usually fails. You have to work your arse off, to avert this. On daily basis, your whole live. Ive grown up in such a family. You can romanticize this, but in the end, you are living on the edge.
So the picture of a 13(?) year old kid inside a unpolished takeaway with the text "better done his homework" is a glorification of "family owned asian cuisine"? I dunno. I think this would look different
Ok, so explain the joke to me. On what lvl is it supposed to work then?
Im a big fan of the street rule "Ehrenschere" (Honor Scissors)
Both Players agree to take scissors on first turn and play a draw. You are free to take an other figure than scissors on first turn, but then you are "Ehrenlos" (honorless). Something, the street will remember :O
