You're getting down voted right now and I think it's important to understand why because I had a similar reaction not too long ago. I was curious to understand my own biases and what I think it's important to share what I learned as a cis male in IT.

Women just want to be women. Some want to wear nail polish and "look pretty" while others want to just rock a T-shirt and jeans. Like men who wear full tux and debug code at 6pm on a Friday (because they aren't farmers), they want to be what they want to be.

Men have the luxury to wear whatever they want (for the most part) and not get shit for it. Women have to do everything that men do and do it with maturity while handing the shit that men throw their way.

I learned this lesson when I was the sole male STEM counselor at an all girls camp. It was a volunteer gig that my company put together. They had last minute cancellations and I had time on my calendar and so I volunteered. I did not know it was all girls and I certainly did not know I'd be the only guy.

I stayed curious and helped where I could. My job was to be a project manager, help teams understand how to win their competition that had set requirements. So I walked them through all that and looked over their code. There as a dedicated "make up hour" where the girls were encouraged to make their presentations "pretty" with make up, glitter, etc. I personally found it pointless given how far behind we were but I kept my mouth shut.

And I observed.

The fact that these girls could do this and do IT was immensely powerful. You could see their spirits lifted. It rocked my world and made me check my own beliefs. Why not allow them to be pretty? Why not let them take an hour to put glitter and stickers on their board if it made them happy?

Did we win? No. But they enjoyed it.

In my 20+ years in tech, we need more women because they bring perspective in ways I don't. Not because they want to be pretty because they provide insight in ways I don't expect. Anything I can do to help make that happen I'll gladly do.

Study after study has been done on every election looking for people who publicly say they are moving if their party lost. They found consistently that the number of people who follow through are in the single digits.

Trump famously said he was going to leave the US when he lost to Biden. We all begged him to go but nope.

MAGAs have repeatedly said they are going to move to Russia or Argentina or other conservative places only to realize they wouldn't be in the ruling class.

Last I looked (2ish years ago?) they were working on a base-station where it sits between the grill and your phone, which has a longer range. But the base technology is still bluetooth.

this is, in a round about way, making a right. Democrats are being disenfranchised in Texas and to make up for it, Republicans are being disenfranchised in California. If you want to complain, fucking ask the Republicans in Texas. They can easily and quickly unfuck this whole situation by making no changes to their districts.

Want to know the test on the whether the Republicans want to play fair? Republicans in California should be scolding their colleagues in Texas for redrawing maps unfairly but instead are blaming Democrats in California.

The Democrats are finally starting to realize you can't play chess with a child who refuses to acknowledge the rules.

Do you remember what the Trump administration promised to deliver two weeks ago?

That's why it works.

That's what I said!!!

The device was less than useless without Internet access.

Tbh I probably should have done more research before buying it.

When's the last time most of us have seen an ad that legitimately informed us of something we didn't know existed but ended up wanting?

The point of advertising isn't always about informing you of something new but to remind you of the brand.

There isn't a soul on this planet that doesn't know Coca Cola but they still advertise.

I really want one that integrates with Home Assistant. The biggest issue I have is knowing when my grill is running cold. The thermometer I have now only tracks current temperature and not throughout the cook.

I remember buying a Meater thermometer. I thought it was so cool to be able to monitor your cooking temperature from my phone.

But then I learned two things:

  • your phone needs to be within Bluetooth range of the thermometer
  • your phone must send the data to their cloud, only then for you to go to their app to read the data

There is no way for you to read the data locally.

I sold it and replaced it with a fully local thermometer that works without Bluetooth. Sure it can't show it on my phone but damn if I am going to let a company chain me to their data center just so I can read a fucking thermometer.

The political process and how to change it in a meaningful and lasting way without risking ~~tyranny~~ profits of the capital class is almost always the problem.
