Ireland sounds like a great time XD

The first time I called 911 was actually to avoid being involved in/the victim of a crime.

I (~16m) was walking home very late at night with a friend, when a pickup truck passed us on the road, then suddenly pulled over blocking the sidewalk ~10m ahead of us.

4 guys got out and began to walk towards us rather aggressively.

I pulled out my phone and very loudly said 'Hey google, Dial 911'.

All 4 stopped in their tracks. My friend and I didn't stop; we walked around them and then their truck, and continued onto a path vehicles couldn't follow, then we took off running as soon as we had rounded the corner out of sight.

For the record; I learned that day, google assistant won't actually dial emergency numbers for you. (that may have changed, it's been a long time and I'm not going to play with testing that) I'm really glad this encounter didn't end poorly because apparently I hadn't actually called for help.

Kind of just sounds like OneDrive.

They'll get it for you if you want it, but you don't get to know where it's actually stored (or who else is accessing it).

I'm curious; are you guys seeing this currently?

I've viewed this link half a dozen times in the last two hours and never once saw the rate limiting page, from Canada. I wonder if it's regional.

Keep solid logs about these notifications and the efforts you take to resolve them.

'you pay me for this long detailed list of problems I resolve daily' hands over thick stack of printed notes

'The fact that you don't notice me on the front end is proof I'm doing a good job of it.'

Why do people even choose to view unedited video anyway?

  • Some creators don't have editors/don't release edited video; but people are still interested in what they're doing

  • Some editors suck, cutting out interesting or important context

  • Sometimes people aren't looking for an edited down play-by-play; but rather a longer piece of content to half-pay attention to while they do something else as well.

That third point is one of the VERY VERY few things I miss about live TV: picking a channel and just letting it play for hours. No need to stop every few minutes to think of and/or pick the next video, just turn it on and let it play.

I run ErsatzTV alongside Emby for exactly this purpose. I've got a few standup comedy channels that just play one of a thousand standup specials one after the other all day long. No planning needed and no interruptions, just endless comedy, leaving me to work on other things without just sitting in a quiet room. Sometimes I do the same with livestreams.

Bit old, but pretty much everything Source Engine is self-hostable isn't it? Most of them even come with a pre-configured SRCDS (SouRCe Dedicated Server) you can download and run right from the steam launcher.

I know I ran a GarrysMod server for quite a while; piling a shit ton of mods on it. Plus any source game you've got installed, Garrys Mod can and will use the resources/assets from.

:/ shit.

I'm pretty sure I saw this a few months ago and moved to the beatkind/watchtower fork, but it's not been updated in 6mo either. (Devs only been active in private repos; so they're still around, just not actively working on watchtower)

Guess I'll find another solution. Hell, I might just put my own script on crontab. Looping through folders running docker compose down/pull/up isn't too hard really.

Setting their management interfaces to be accessed via https because the VPN blocks (after snooping on) http only access would be my guess

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

No. I'm talking about measuring the time in-between inputs being received over the remote connection. Purely observation from the receiver side of the connection.

Network overhead + dropped and re-sent packets, introducing unusual lag in between commands/keystrokes.

A key being pressed and key being released are two separate events that get transmitted separately and usually happen pretty close together. That gap getting larger, due to the long-distance connection introducing lag, could be what they were looking at.

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Perhaps something like time between key pressed and key released being abnormally high? Or erratic mouse movement?

I know whenever a PC I'm using is being remotely controlled, the mouse jerks around instead of moving smoothly around the screen. I'd imagine that gets even worse with ping/more layers of remote connections.

Perhaps Mozilla doesn't quite fit into this category, as their software is far more optional to the average user than say, Microsoft Edge or Copilot being forcibly installed on every Windows PC; but more and more companies are forcing features on users that don't want them, after being told over and over again:

NO, WE DON'T WANT THIS SHIT

Refusing to take 'no' for an answer, and instead doing whatever you want to people IS a rapists mentally and I will not apologize for pointing it out.

I have had around a dozen smart bulbs/switches/plugs from three companies for 5-10 years now. Globe Suite, Meross, and 'C by GE' (General Electric). All three are dependent on their respective cloud services, and are integrated with Google Home. (I know, I know.... It's time to dump this crap, it's why I'm here) Globe Suite has been great tbh, but 'C by GE' is absolute trash, and one of the two Meross devices have now died, prompting a long awaited change.

My big sticking point is knowing where to start with hardware. I don't know much about the different communication protocols/methods or what to choose (zigbee? Z-wave? Do I need some sort of Hub? Can/should I just use a wifi connection like the current setup? 🤷), and I don't really know where to look to purchase smart devices that aren't cloud dependent. (buying from Canada)

Funds are tight so this'll be an over time project. For now I'm looking to replace three switches. One single pole. One 3-way. Ane one dimmer. Neutral wires are available at all three locations.

Later I'll be looking to replace 3 smart plugs. Adding current/power monitoring would be neat, but definitely not a priority as I have an Iotawatt at the pannel. After that 4 dimmable white light smart bulbs. Finally there's an RGBW LED controller that'll need replacing. The plugs, bulbs, and leds are all Globe Suite; I'm not in a major hurry to replace them as they've given me next to no trouble compared to the other two companies garbage.

Where do I start? Where do you guys buy hardware, and what manufacturers?

What should I be looking for in hardware I can integrate with HA and essentially firewall off from the internet?

Finally, how about things like sensors? (weather, motion, moisture, sound)

The next week or so I'll fire up an HA container just to poke around a bit more. That part I'm pretty confident in, it's just figuring out some hardware to go with it. Thanks for any advice :)

Sonarr and Radarr keep grabbing releases from a couple specific groups ( 'SuccessfulCrab' and 'ELiTE') for items that clearly haven't even aired yet. These almost always contain only .scr or .lnk files, which have been blocklisted in my torrent client. This leaves Sonarr/Radarr awaiting manual intervention for 'complete' downloads that contain no files.

How do I get them to block anything and everything that contain the strings 'SuccessfulCrab' and 'ELiTE' ??? I want them to stop even trying to grab anything released by those two groups.

I'm so sick of dealing with these.

[EDIT]

OK, so I have been looking at this from the wrong angle.

It is not these groups that I'm upset with, but malware uploaders masquerading as release groups. These names can and will change, making this a game of wack-a-mole if I try to fight it this way.

Initially I'd followed instructions below to block these names/strings being grabbed by the arrs and that does work fantastically; but as above, wack-a-mole. Plus both SuccessfulCrab and ELiTE have plenty of good releases out there, it's not their fault someone's using their names.

So, I'm now running Cleanuparr.

This will maintain a large list of unwanted filetypes in qbittorrent. Then when qbit marks a torrent as complete because there are no wanted files, cleanupparr removes it from both qbit and the arr that requested it, while also triggering a new search for the item.

It can also cleanup items failing to import, stalled downloads, torrents stuck downloading metedata, or things that are just absurdly slow; with varying time scales/stringency.

I'll run this for a bit and see how it goes.

I have absolutely nowhere to put it, being in a 5th floor apartment; but I really want a 10' tall skeleton...

Half debating pissing my neighbors off by just dangling its legs off the balcony down at them. But I also don't have $400+ to drop on that rn :/

I generally don't remember my dreams; at least, not for longer than a couple minutes after waking up.

Over the last month however; I've had three rather upsetting dreams that don't seem to want to fade from my usually poor memory. I'm going to describe them below; have you had anything similar lately?

I guess I'll work my way up from least to most upsetting. This is going to be fairly long, so I'll end each with a quick TLDR.

Two nights ago:

I woke up in my room [in dream], feeling extra groggy/dizzy and really warm. I didn't think much of it, but went to leave my room and found my door was closed. That's bizarre as my door is always open. I tried to open it but the handle wouldn't turn and the door wouldn't budge at all. Then I noticed it was really warm to touch, crouched down and saw the flickering light of fire under the door.

I ran screaming 'Fire! Fire! Help!', first trying to trigger the fire alarm (Apartment. There's a fire alarm in each of the bedrooms, but the button on it is to silence it, not trigger it. It's automatically triggered by heat/smoke detectiors, or pull stations in the communal hallways/stairwells) then running to the window to call for help. There I found we were on the ground floor instead of the fifth floor I actually live on, so I escaped out that window and ran to rescue my sister+mother in their own rooms. My sister was already on her way out when I got there so I continued to my mom's room.

When I turned the corner of the building; I found my moms windows were tiny, the size of cat doors. I began screaming into them trying to wake my mother, who's chronically fatigued and usually deep asleep while mentally panicking trying to figure out how we're going to get her out of there with these super tiny windows. After screaming for a minute or two I was just starting to see movement that I thought was her getting up, when I woke up....

TLDR: woke up in an apartment fire and struggled to save my mother. Woke before resolved.

The very next night:

I had taken a bus to a different city for some medical treatment. Whatever that was had been completed and I needed to get home, but was struggling to figure out how. Unfamiliar city, asking people for directions they just shrugged me off, and I was just feeling very mentally overwhelmed and unstable (this alone is quite unusual for me).

While trying to figure out how to get home, looking down at my phone; some sketchy looking guy sneaks up on me (I mostly just didn't notice him approach from behind) and surprises me asking questions. I don't remember much detail there (what he looked like/asked), I just remember feeling immediately uncomfortable/unsafe and startled, so I quickly walk away not talking to him, while discretely pulling out my pocket knife and getting ready to use it if necessary.

I head to the other side of the building I was beside and continue trying to figure out how to use my phone to get home, struggling to use gmaps; when sketchy guy sneaks up from behind a second time. This time I lunge at him and try to stab and slash him with my knife probably a dozen times, but find it's incredibly dull and doing absolutely nothing. It may as well be plastic. Guy is not getting upset/aggressive at all, in fact he's just kind of laughing at me and commenting on how dull the knife is.

This is all adding to the feeling of mental instability and being overwhelmed, quite dramatically.

The next thing I remember; I'm standing in the middle of a road intersection desperately trying to type 'home' into the destination for google maps, but the phone keeps replacing whatever I type with some long name I don't recognize. I end up handing the phone to the same guy I had tried to stab and through tears sobbed 'please type home for me'

At that point I was completely and utterly overwhelmed by the whole situation and had a total mental breakdown. I collapsed in a heap in the middle of the road, doing that ugly crying where you're not even making sounds because you just can't get any air in or out. I had pulled my shirt off to use as a rag, wiping my face off, but it was absolutely soaked in tears, snot, and sweat.

The last thing I remember is laying on my back in the road, eyes clamped shut as hard as the muscles could, but trying/wanting to open my eyes; and just clawing at my throat and chest desperately trying to take a breath, but woefully unable to; like my body was shutting down and suffocating me. Then I woke up...

TLDR: I got lost in an unfamiliar city and suffered a complete and total mental breakdown after trying (and failing) to kill a guy I thought was going to hurt me.

I want to add a disclaimer before this one: I fucking despise Nazi ideology. People are people, we're all equal, just living our lives making our own choices and everyone should have to opportunity to live freely doing the things they love. Racism, sexism, and hate all around have no place in this world.

Last dream, around 3 weeks ago:

I was a guard in what I can only assume was a Nazi prison camp; specifically standing guard during executions by electricity. I don't explicitly remember any nazi symbols, but there's a gut feeling that that's what it was.

A woman and man were both brought in, chained to the wall and connected to wires. It seemed clear from everyone's body language and demeanor that we all knew this was very wrong, yet we were still doing it. Someone flipped the switch, and I remember turning away and pounding the wall with my fist in despair. I also remember the sound of this woman, now behind me, just screaming on top of electrical buzzing/sparking sounds. That haunting sound just won't fade, it's so vivid in my memory...

I turned back when it was over, grabbed the hand of the woman's now smoking corpse, and just quietly said "I'm sorry". That's where I woke up.

TLDR: Participated in/listened to/was a Nazi executing people via electrocution.

I at least had a nice peaceful sleep lastnight... Slept a good 7ish hours comfortable and uninterrupted and I don't recall any bizarre or upsetting dreams from it.

Thank you for listening to/reading my self-inflicted(?) trauma dump. Sry if I chose the wrong place for it.

I have a pile of part lists for tools I'm maintaining, in pdf format; and I'm looking for a good way to take a part number, search through the collection of pdfs, and output which files contain that number. Essentially letting me match random unknown part numbers to a tool in our fleet.

I'm pretty sure the majority of them are actual text you can select and copy+paste, so searching those shouldn't be too difficult; but I do know there's at least a couple in there that are just a string of jpgs packed in a pdf file. They will probably need OCR, but tbh I can probably live with skipping over those altogether.

I've been thinking of spinning up an instance of paperless-ngx and stuffing them all in there so I can let it index the contents including using OCR, then use it's search feature; but that also seems a tad overkill.

I'm wondering if you fine folks have any better ideas. What do you think?

The cover for the airbox on this Honda generator hinges open to the left, but the frame rail is directly in front. The airbox is also bolted to the engine from inside (behind the filter).

I've throughly looked over this and there is no way to open that airbox unless you unbolt the engine from the frame, or perhaps modify the lid hinges with a saw so it doesn't have to swing as far to come off.

What do you prefer to use for a password manager?

How well does it work on mobile? (specifically, using autofill on android 14)

I'm currently using Vaultwarden; but the android app, which is where I'm using it 95% of the time, has always been a bit flakey getting autofill to popup. Now it's decided to stop working entirely; so I'm going to look around at some alternatives for now.

/edit:

Well, idk what happened.

I spent about 30min trying different things: switched androids autofill settings to another app, changed them back, cleared app data, force stopped everything relevant, re-installed bitwarden, restarted the device, messed with accessibility; nothing seemed to work. Bitwarden adamantly refused to popup for autofill in anything I'd tried. (4-5 different sites in chrome, firefox, and duckduckgo. The openvpn app, Jerboa, my bank. Nothing worked. Absolutely 0 sign of autofill anywhere.)

I made this post and went for a walk.

Now suddenly autofill is working again.

I hate technology sometimes.

/edit again:

The best option I've seen so far: There is an 'autofill' QuickSettings button you can add to the notification tray that opens the vault and asks which item to fill with. (just like the 'open vault' inline autofill option). If inline isn't popping up, use that.

Is anyone else having insane amounts of trouble getting the bitwarden android app to autofill?

(it's explicitly selected at the default autofill app in androids settings, as well as specifically in apps where they have the options available)

It seems to be getting worse and worse; now ~80% of the time lately auto-fill absolutely REFUSES to popup AT ALL. (it was closer to 20% until recently)

Restart the app I'm using (doesn't matter which one, they are all affected), restart bitwarden, force stop everything, fully restart the device; it doesn't make a difference, bitwarden just refuses to pop up now, forcing me to copy passwords into my clipboard manually.
