A setup with one monitor and a computer with a 5090 will draw about 1 kW under load. That's 7 kWh per week if the average is 1 hour a day.

So that's about:

  • 233k Google searches
  • 20k GPT 4o queries
  • 175 GPT 5 queries

Had to look up Chat GPT's energy usage because you made me curious.

Seems like Open AI claims Chat GPT 4o uses about 0.34 Wh per "query." This is apparently consistent with third party estimates. The average Google search is about 0.03 Wh, for reference.

Issue is, "query" isn't defined, and it's possible this figure is the energy consumption of the GPUs alone, omitting additional sources that comprise the full picture (energy conversion loss, cooling, infrastructure, etc.). It's also unclear if this figure was obtained during model training, or during normal use.

I also briefly saw that Chat GPT 5 uses between 18-40 Wh per query, so 100x more than GPT 4o. The OP used GPT 5.

It sounds like the energy consumption is relatively bad no matter how it's spun, but consider that it replaces other forms of compute and reduces workload for people, and the net energy tradeoff may not be that bad. Consider the task from the OP - how much longer/how many more people would it take to accomplish the same result that GPT 5 and the lone author accomplished? I bet the net energy difference isn't that far from zero.

Here's the article I found: https://towardsdatascience.com/lets-analyze-openais-claims-about-chatgpt-energy-use/

If we're just talking about the USA, then the ~200 million working people would get $150 each.

I've heard port forwarding is important for seeding, but why is that? Doesn't your uploaded data still go through your vpn regardless if port forwarding is enabled?

You severely overestimate how much the average person cares about their own privacy.

The lack of empathy I see here disappoints me. Comments like these are similar to Europeans telling Americans to throw their lives away and rebel against their government, or "just emmigrate" like it's really as easy as hopping on a plane.

These Russians could have been conscripted, they might've enlisted to feed their starving families, or they might fully support the war effort because they're young and brainwashed by state propaganda. They're all victims of this shitty war in their own way.

War sucks. There are zero winners. I'm not at all sympathetic to Russia's cause and wish they'd leave Ukraine alone, so I understand the desire to hate Russians and to cheer at the death of every Russian soldier. I just wish people practiced nuance here and didn't give into the hate so much.

Reading this literally made me feel a little queasy.

Awfully reminiscent of the trouble the NASDAP had trying to draw the line between Jews and non-Jews. It made them look like fucking idiots, and I hope to hell history treats the GOP the same way.

That's what we said about COVID and absolutely nothing improved fundamentally.

I'm more disappointed that this is "news" than anything else

Yep, that's why birdshot is basically the only safe ammo that can be shot into the air unless you're in the middle of the ocean or something.

I transferred to a new college and learned the first week of class that they required a few vaccinations I was missing. No problem, the on campus health center can provide them. I confirm with them that they accept my insurance, so I go get the shots.

A few months later, I get a bill in the mail for over $3000. Apparently the health center wasn't in-network, so I have no idea what they meant by "we accept your insurance." I layer learned that if I had driven 10 minutes west across the state border, there was an in-network office where those two vaccinations would've been completely covered.

I still haven't paid a penny towards that bill, fuck them. I get daily phone calls from an unknown number, it's probably collections, but I don't know for sure since I never answer it. This was years ago and my credit score never took a hit. I'd rather die than reward these parasites with my money.

I'm pretty sure I have a tumor growing on my hip too. I'd get it checked, but between student loans, insane cost of living, and rising costs of literally everything else, I can't afford to right now. I'm a childless engineer with "great" health insurance and a roommate, so I'm relatively well off. I have no idea why shit hasn't boiled over yet. Makes me want to depose some CEOs too.
