The UK and France will abandon previous plans to recognise a Palestinian state at an upcoming conference, according to diplomats.

The Guardian has reported that French officials briefed their Israeli counterparts this week that the conference would not be the moment for recognition.

Instead, it will now focus on outlining steps towards recognition, contingent on a series of measures and concessions from the Palestinians.

These will include a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli captives, reform of the Palestinian Authority, economic reconstruction and the end of Hamas rule in Gaza.

Irish soldiers, who are serving as peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, have come under fire while on a joint patrol with the Lebanese Armed Forces, the Tánaiste (Irish deputy prime minister) has said.

The incident happened near the Blue Line in South Lebanon.

A number of small arm rounds were fired in the vicinity of the area in which the patrol was operating, the Irish Defence Force said.

There were no reported injuries and no damage to the armoured vehicles they were operating from.

Media reports suggest that the accuracy of North Korean ballistic missiles is improving due to the data the country receives from the use of these missiles by Russian forces against Ukraine.

The previous analysis conducted in January–February 2024 showed that the remains of a ballistic missile documented in Kharkiv were of North Korean origin.
