Disclaimer: I'm not American so will never understand your culture towards politics as well.

I don't think it's fair to point at every bad thing Trump has done so far and say that's the fault of your MIL for voting for Trump. The way I see it as a non-American, Trump did say he was going to be a racist xenophobic piece of shit on his election campaign, but the media heavily downplayed this, and Trump still tricked and lied to everyone. Politics is weird like that: you can theoretically campaign on one thing but then throw everything out and do the opposite once you get elected.

Hating Kamala and Biden is a fair opinion to hold as well. I consider a vote for them as picking the lesser of the 2 evils, rather than voting on what's best for America, because both parties seemed awful to me (a non-American).

I think it's important that you try to at least understand and empathise with why your MIL voted Trump in the first place. You were very light on those details in your post, which I suspect is because you're very quick to judge someone based on who they vote for.

Maybe she really hated one policy from the democrats so voted for Trump? Maybe she bought all the lies Trump told during his campaign and regrets her vote strongly? Maybe she's a single-issue person who voted for Trump because of one policy and ignored everything else?

Waiting for blurays to just come with an activation code like a lot of PC game copies do already

It's fine, you're just making a copy of their crops for personal use

Some appliances are louder than others. Curious to hear what appliances you can hear

I'm able to hear the AC hum from motors and any inductive heating elements.

When it's completely silent in the room, I can hear the transformer in my phone charger make a variable squealing sound

Many modern cars will stop working and there will be a huge demand for cars from the 90s, due to the anti-theft authentication in the key not working.

In America, not being able to drive is basically a death sentence. Especially for the few people living rurally with no fixed internet or phone line to be able to call for help.

The way we socialise has changed to the point where it's normal to talk to people over text chat. This leaves a footprint that talking face to face with someone does not.

In addition to other privacy concerns, I don't want things I say that I would've gotten away with had I spoken it to my friends in real life, to come back and haunt me, either by a platform having a massive data breach, or it being used as evidence in a legal case against me.

On that last point, I'm not using chat services to organise crime, but taken out of context, any message I send can paint a picture that I'm an awful person and change some jury's opinion of me. This isn't something I want to think about before sharing a dank meme to a friend on discord.

Until we get AI that mimics the layers

I believe there is still a major court case underway to decide if AI trained on copyrighted data makes it's derivative works copyrighted too.

It's an important court battle because it will set a precedent for every other AI related case for all the other AI companies

Royalties every time you use a line from a Disney musical in spoken conversation

Thank you for sharing the lies that trump supporters tell themselves. I think you're getting downvoted because you forgot the /s

Every panel is flawed

People don't walk that closely together

People don't bike that closely together

Only a double decker bus could fit that many people without cramming people in like sardines

Moving cars should obey a safe following distance, so unless traffic is gridlocked, they shouldn't be that close either

Rent a girlfriend is garbage. Don't waste your time

Fake news btw

Hi all, I tried hosting my own lemmy instance to take some of the load off lemmy.world, but a lot of the posts do not get synchronised to my instance. When they do, they never got more than a couple upvotes.

I get a lot of warnings in the logs that I've got an incoming connection not on my allowed hosts, of which I've put "lemmy.world" and "lemmy.ml"

Does self hosting like this actually reduce the load on lemmy.world and the fediverse? And how can I fix the issue I'm having?
