Collapse thread had the gifted article a couple days ago before it got nuked for "inciting violence"

I'm sure those comments will do the same for you, good luck

Yeah, it's nothing like the movie. Pretty quick read covering the necessity for sabotage and questioning why it hasn't happened yet with a good bit of historical references

His PhD work, Fossil Capital, is free on Audible. It's not too difficult to follow on audio format if that's your thing.

Covers a lot of ground on environment, workers rights, and capitalism in the realm of transitioning to steam power from water wheels.

I'd definitely recommend it

Not anymore, he dropped out lol

No argument from me there, I'll go at it with them to pull out all the arguments I might hear from people I know in the real world then just stop. I'm under no illusion the people I'm engaging with will come around haha

Yeah it's a bad habit I'm hoping to kick once I've gotten over this bout of COVID. For all I said, it doesn't really change any irl minds more than just shutting them up. Plenty of more productive things I could be doing with that time

I was about to post same sentiment. Lemmyverse is small to begin with. There are plenty of other areas for people to begin the pipeline like azan or deprogram

What other space exists for this type of community? I was engaging with some comrades in r/Collapse on a recent post until it got nuked for 'inciting violence' because it was a NYT article interviewing Andreas Malm about his positions on property destruction. There's no other online place for us if we always stoop to not scaring away libs where it's dubious if they'll ever come around

[–] MattsAlt@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago

Yeah that's fair, I slowly came around as a lurker and from my partner gently opposing my shitty takes like 'there can be good billionaires'

I think most open minded people fall into some amount of "activated" in my previous post as I think once you begin actually questioning it's only a matter of time. That's probably a bit too optimistic though

Damn tankies trying to save the planet with us. We'll do it alone!

Tbh I don't think anyone is ever going to be convinced online. Hexbear is mostly a safe space for communists and other sympathetic parties to hang out. If someone sees the content and wants to participate then they've been activated elsewhere. If they don't, then I doubt any amount of performative civility would undo the propaganda filling their skull and would only create a less safe space for our minority comrades.

Changing minds is the purview of real life interactions

Lol why did a solar punk instance block us? Guess for the same reason a supposed inclusive one did.

Really not hopeful about the future when these existential threats still aren't enough for people to examine why it might make sense to form coalitions with communists or other flavors of actual leftists

I think reading Blackshirts and Reds by Michael Parenti would be helpful. He doesn't make excuses and acknowledges the racism in the USSR. I think laying bare the actual shortcomings of the project places it in reality instead of the cartoonish evil depicted by mainstream Western history. It allows for a clearer understanding of the good alongside the bad and shows where we can improve in the next iteration of a socialist project

We're all human and need to see where we can do better, and despite the issues of past socialist experiments, it seems to many here that this form of government is the most likely way for humanity to do the most good for all
