Depends. For most people who aren't smartphone enthusiasts, I agree with the roughly 4-5 year upgrade cycle. If you're into tech and like having the latest and greatest, maybe 2-3 years. Upgrading every year is excessive IMHO.

Audio Technica ATH-M50x and Sennheiser HD 560S. The M50x is easier to drive and has fuller bass, while I have to really crank up the volume on the HD 560s, though they do sound cleaner and more detailed.
