There is no wrong way to play nor a right way with this game. I've been through the game 5 times now, each path different, each one unique. I will offer one hint, though.

In the second act protect the priestess of Selune at the inn any way you can. It helps big time.

The bullet hit the teleprompter which fragmented and either a bullet fragment or a piece of the teleprompter clipped his ear.

An actual bullet from an AR-15 would have blown a good chunk of cartilage off if it clipped him. That does not grow back and it would be noticeable like a motherfucker.
