Hey fellas, with the tariffs in place, I suppose some few get ready to f*** up your supply chain on short notice

[–] a887dcd7a@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Well, the LoRa frequency differs from continent to continent: telling me you are in North America.

Also we don't have the need for a civil-war post-apocalyptic, wasteland communication that cannot be tracked 😅. It is more an American thing to prep for.

[–] a887dcd7a@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Having some nodes myself: it is a nice gadget and even works with ATAK.

But without proper purpose, participants and a plan of communications it is still only a gadget.

E.g. if you only sit alone in your apartment and think they’ll come in handy when the power is gone, you’re mistaken. Spread devices among your mutuals, set up channels and speak about how you plan to use them.

Also, even though the messages are encrypted, be aware that each device sends a unique ID and can still be easily tracked down by professionals.

What a monster. Took away all the children…

I suppose this obsession about eggs is American.

[–] a887dcd7a@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Yip, got a stationary (solar) and a mobile node.

T-Beam with increased battery capacity and a T-echo with increased battery in a new casing.

But it is actually more for hobby (paintball/airsoft) than for prepping.

Pretty much TEOTWAWKI with american focus.

Need to have the TOS in mind on this one.

  • ℹ️ To keep the list manageable, I'll link to english resources first, whilst indicating the other native languages. This is based on the idea, that anybody reading this should be capable of understanding English, and be able to to navigate the page to its native version.

When you look at a community in a browser, the sidebar should show subscribe.

I would refrain from making it available. For one, there are already plenty of sources for people who would like to get invested. The other thing is, that such a huge collection needs to be sighted, understood and sieved to have purpose for individuals/the recipient.

My point of view is, that a pile of redundant documents could make things worse because it is not easily digestable.

Do you have something particular on for your community?

Also, don't hesitate to crosspost.

Yea, I asked the question days ago, before that influx.

In the meantine I went in and posted/reorganized some stuff.

Gonna lock this post.

Where to start? (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) by a887dcd7a@lemmy.world to c/preppers@lemmy.world

The term prepping can be applied on several levels and means a different thing to different people. From an US American context with broader landscapes, sparse population and fragile delivery routes, to Europan countries with dense population where help seems to be nearby in hours.

Each individual needs to assess their situation and the personal risks for themselves. As a result of that risk assessment people should come up with plans and prepare their techniques and environment accordingly.
Always having in mind that these topics can lead to a rabbit hole everyone has to decide about the sane and proper level of preparedness. Some might be fine with a bottle of water and a blanket in their car, others might want to prep a whole Get Home Bag to make it through more challenging terrain.

In this post we try to collect some information on where to get started.

If you have noteworthy sources, feel free to share them. The post will be updated over time.

Should we lock this stale community down?

Does anyhone know a good Garmin Instinct 2 Solar alternative?

I wanted to buy the now obsolete Instinct 2 due to its robustness and longevity, but recently learned that Garmin is american :-)

Does Suunto have any affordable Solar variants? Do you know other manufacturers?

In the last weeks several databases and websites emerged around the idea of buying European, or local.

Coming from different communities overviews of products and services can (for example) be found at the following websites:

If you are using Firefox or Chrome you can be nudged to do better by using the opensource Go-European-Plugin:

(If you know any other starting points feel free to comment.)

An up-to-date list of recommended European projects and companies, curated by the community to support and strengthen the European tech ecosystem, specifically for users interested in privacy and sustainability.

Update 2025-03-05: Vote is in favor of keeping this community. This post is unpinned and locked.

TLDR: upvote if you want BuyFromEU to stick around.

Hi folks, new mod here.

There are two quite similar communities on different instances. Some users - coming from the different place - are in favor for abandoning this one, fearing a split and unecessary separation of users for an important movement. I'm not so sure if the other one is a substitute. Also - to be honest - I dislike the agressive, relentless style some users use in a -if you will- foreign community.

Procedure

  • An upvote on this post means this you want this community to evolve. I would then proceed and search for more moderators and try to keep this a productive, interconnected space.
  • A downvote means you are in favor of abandoning and settling with the other community.

You can use the comments on this post to express your feelings in a civil manner.

I'll finally check back in about 48hours and take a look at where we are standing.

BuyFromEU (lemmy.world)

Moin, moin,

Hi, it seems like I just got designated additional moderator for this community. This happend without any further communication with mod or anyone, so I'm pretty suprised.

I need to sort out if this was by accident, how it came to be, and where to move from here on.

Come abroad this journey and stay tuned 😂

Hi guys,

let me be upfront and blunt, just so this issue gets addressed early on.

There are two communities on two differnt servers. feddit.org/c/BuyFromEU and feddit.uk/c/buyeuropean. They significantly differ in daily traffic/contributers and amount of moderators.

One user of feddit.uk is quite vocal about his community being the real deal and puts a lot of effort in onboarding redditors in his community.

Acknowledging the viewpoint and reason ( META Discussion ), I don't like how he is kind of overstepping placing his solution in any context, like it is the only real deal.

His arguments might be valid in some points, but the style is really poor.

Nonetheless, unmoderated communities without traction fade out by themselves and don't need artificial accelration.

To be honest it is upto @Soggy_Commission_934@feddit.org what to do with this community and to see if he wants to step up and put more moderators in place, or not.

I would prefer to have both communities to evolve in whatever directory they are heading, without interfering.

In the end informed people can subscribe to both and decide for themselves where they want to contribute.

Edit: one user, not moderator.
