there aren’t a lot of nice places hiring foreign workers en mass, and meta, google, palantir, tormentnexus, etc, offer a chance at a better life for them and their families.

the major reason to make life a hell for as many people as possible is to have this kind of leverage on them.

the goal is to keep people on a knife's edge of destruction, so that when some rich turd rolls up and offers you a tiny amount of security to do something reprehensible you'll do it.

and if you live with deep, personal shame for it for the rest of your life, that's just an extra little treat for them.
