Genius. We build homes and then we put spikes in those homes so they can't lay down in them.

I saw it for the first time during May's storm, which made bright red/purple ones above the Wyoming-Colorado border after 22:00. They're remarkable and if you're within the right latitude range it's worth finding the nearest dark sky area to watch them: https://www.darkskymap.com/nightSkyBrightness

edit: also me right now-

Will World War Three happen yet? We think we'll make it to Halloween at least, so that's fun.

Their recent episodes on the Lebanon front have also been good.

The solarpunk-inspired 'Dear Alice' commercial produced by the animation company The Line for Chobani is one of the most beautiful depictions of an ecological future I had seen, except for one glaring thing: it was an advertisement for a dairy company, and my solarpunk vision doesn't have either of those things. Neither is compatible with the 'degrowth' economic model outlined by people like Jason Hickel, not with the ethic of an ecological society described by social ecologists like Murray Bookchin.

In light of that fatal flaw I decided to paint out all of the branding and recreated the sound design so that solarpunks like myself can enjoy this beautiful world without having to invite the ugliness of capitalism into it. Enjoy!

I'm concerned that Israel is going to commemorate the day with its response to the Iranian attack. Nothing about the American response recently has given me confidence that they won't strike oil and nuclear infrastructure.

spoilerA Denver parent's lawsuit that would have forced educators to display the "straight pride" flag has been thrown out.

Nathan Feldman filed the suit against Denver Public Schools, claiming he and his two children were discriminated against and that their First Amendment rights were infringed upon when DPS rejected his demand to add the heterosexual banner next to LGBTQ+ flags in classrooms. Feldman sued for the flags to be instated, and for damages of at least $3 million.

Feldman's lawsuit claimed, via Colorado Politics, that schools were allowing "nonbinary and non-cisgender students to have flags displayed that represent their genders but not allowing Plaintiffs to have flags displayed that represent their genders," incorrectly conflating sexual orientation with gender identity.

DPS responded that individual teachers made the decision to display LGBTQ+ flags in their classrooms, and that they are not required to display them by district policy but rather that the policy protects their rights to display the flag, as it is a "symbol consistent with the District’s equity-based curriculum."

"Plaintiffs assert that passing a resolution recognizing LGBTQIA+ students or staff without providing equal recognition to those who don’t so identify is an actionable distinction. Not so," DPS' attorneys wrote.

Efforts to make "straight pride" happen have continuously failed as they've popped up across the United States. In 2019, a "straight pride" event in Dallas infamously only attracted three attendees.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Scott T. Varholak recommended that Feldman's case be dismissed in August, writing that while he may "plainly disagree with DPS’s selected messaging, and phrase this disagreement in constitutional terms," Feldman had "ultimately fail to allege any injury except exposure to a flag that they do not feel represented by."

U.S. District Court Judge Regina M. Rodriguez recently affirmed the recommendation and dismissed Feldman's case, writing that he gave "no legal support" for his argument, "and the Court finds none."

This is the chud: https://x.com/natfartman < He Eve Fartlowed himself which made me suspicious but the account was made in 2017 and the lawsuit is from 2023. It's full of generic bigotry and follows all the normal guys I'd expect from a right-winger.

He's only described as part of a "youthful couple" and would have to be born in 1980~ for that to apply. Potentially him but I don't know his age.

A prelude and a primer to this season's story: the tragedy of Cambodia.

Fish and Chips. A meal so familiar with british culture that it's hard to imagine a town without a shop selling the food.

However, in recent years with rising energy costs and food supply issues, the cost of this once working class meal has risen to crazy levels, and become unafforable to those who used to look at this as a cheap meal.

I decided to hit the streets, and find the people running these shops to hear about the troubles first hand. And also ask the public, 'when was the last time you had fish and chips?'

It is estimated that in coming years there could be a drastic reduction in fish and chip shops all roun the UK.

The temperature of LHS 1140 is 3,096 K (2,823 °C; 5,113 °F), and it has a luminosity of 0.0038 times that of the Sun

For comparison, the Sun is 1 solar mass and radius, has a temperature of 5778 K with 1 solar luminosity

The orbit of LHS 1140 b takes 24.737 days to complete, much quicker than Earth's year of 365 days. Its orbital radius is at 0.0946 AU, or 9.46% the distance between Earth and the Sun. While this is quite close, the star LHS 1140 is so dim that the planet only gets 0.43 times the incident flux of Earth at this distance.[2] Assuming an albedo of 0, LHS 1140 b has an equilibrium temperature of 230 K (−43 °C; −46 °F), compared to Earth's at 255 K (−18 °C; −1 °F). If LHS 1140 b has an albedo similar to that of Earth, the equilibrium temperature would be even lower, at 201 K (−72 °C; −98 °F). However, with a greenhouse effect at least as strong as Earth's LHS 1140 b would have a surface temperature greater than 266 K (−7 °C; 19 °F) for an albedo of 0. Due to the high mass of the planet, it likely has a thicker atmosphere with a more powerful greenhouse effect.

It's neat that it's still potentially habitable with such different solar conditions.

Not even just the planes. To be maximally generous to the conspiracy theorists, it could have been pilot error or a weather condition. Birds are also a big problem facing aviation and nobody considers those in 9/11 discourse.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 21 points 10 months ago (6 children)

Planes crash all the time. People are hardwired to look for patterns in things and sometimes we see noise that we mistake for signal. On 9/11 people saw four coincidental accidents- Boeing planes- and assumed it must be part of some bigger plot. Either it's a conspiracy we can all have fun uncovering or it's Foucault's boomerang. Neither group bothers to ask if those plane crashes are like so many others they don't do this with. The only dialectical materialism to apply is between the shitty Boeing mechanic and the plane missing components. The only conspiracy is the one you're seeing unfolding now- corporate negligence resulting in four separate tragic accidents.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 11 points 10 months ago (9 children)

Don't speak for all of us. I'm the first to admit it was a tragic accident and I hate when people turn it into a Scooby Doo mystery or make it seem purely political. Anything to protect Boeing I guess.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago

If you have a pen, you can cross out the parts of the golden rule that are pacifistic and make it "Treat others as they treat you". When someone slaps me I'm not going to turn the other cheek because they'll slap that one too and think they can freely slap others. The goal is just to restore an equilibrium state where nobody slaps anyone else because they understand that they aren't powerful and there will be immediate consequences.

You always liked gray colors? You love panels? Khrushchyovka is your favourite building of all time? Fear not, I present to you the ADVANCED version of Khrushchyovka, still gray and ugly, but now it can be up to 25 stories and up to a kilometer long. When Leonid Brezhnev came to power, he decided to build on the work of his predecessor and continue to erect identical panel houses on the whole territory of the Soviet Union. Nowadays a panel Brezhnevka is the most common type of building you can find in Russia. Let's talk about them and about how they were about to build a whole culture of doomers around themselves.

00:00 - Brezhnevka as a background of our everyday life

04:55 - Khrushchyovka and Brezhnevka - are there any differences?

07:13 - Common problems with Brezhnevkas

10:25 - Different types of Brezhnevkas

"Brezhnevki" (colloquial, by analogy with Stalinkas and Khrushchevkas) is the name of the series of houses built in the Soviet Union from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s, mostly during the era of Leonid Brezhnev. In the late 1950s, ‘One flat per family’ became, by decree, a priority for the communist party and its first secretary, Nikita Khrushchev. Leonid Brezhnev, who came after Khrushchev, disagreed with him on many things. But still decided to continue the practice of building low-cost residential panel buildings on a grand scale. The early "Brezhnevkas" are basically the same Khrushchevkas, made of the same panel blocks, only higher. While Khrushchev buildings had a maximum of 5 stories, under Brezhnev they began to build houses of 9 stories and higher. Buildings were constructed panel by panel out of standard elements manufactured by the factories, The panels would then be transported from the house factories (usually located near the construction sites of the new districts) and assembled in situ. The reason for the launch of the Brezhnevkas was the growth of the population's complaints about the quality of housing in USSR. The delight of getting their own "Khrushchevka" flat gradually dissipated, and eventually a compromise was found - the "Brezhnevka". In fact, "Brezhnevka" is the arithmetic average of two diametrically opposed principles and objectives of urban development: "deteriorated Stalinka" or "improved Khrushchevka". Upgraded variants of the systems developed in the former USSR are still in use, housing millions of urbanites to this day.

Hey there. Somehow you found my video and decided to watch it. So let me introduce myself. I'm Sergei and I'm from Russia. My channel is about my native country. I want to tell English-speaking viewers about the real Russia, about its past and present. Unfortunately, you can find a lot of propaganda about Russia on the Internet, both from the Russian media and from the Western ones. I want to tell you about Russia, as it really is, the country in which I was born, grew up, and lived all my life.

spoilerLabour has lost a handful of former strongholds to independent candidates campaigning on pro-Gaza platforms.

In one of the biggest shocks of the night, shadow minister Jonathan Ashworth lost his Leicester South seat, which had a majority of more than 22,000.

The party's vote is down on average by 23 points in seats where 20% or more of the population identify as Muslim.

In Ilford North, shadow health secretary Wes Streeting was among those who saw his majority slashed - from more than 9,000 to 528.

But Labour managed to win back Rochdale from George Galloway.

Overall it was a spectacular night for Labour, with the party winning a landslide victory.

However, in areas with a high proportion of Muslim voters the party performed badly.

Labour has lost five seats with large Muslim populations - four to independents and one to the Conservatives.

In Leicester South, Shockat Adam declared "this is for Gaza" as he won the seat by 979 votes.

The constituency, where around 30% of the electorate are Muslim, has been held by Mr Ashworth for 13 years.

In nearby Leicester East, the Conservatives benefitted from independent candidates picking up several thousand votes, particularly the area's former Labour MP Claudia Webbe.

Ms Webbe, who was expelled from the party after she was charged and later convicted of harassment, has been a vocal pro-Palestinian campaigner.

The Tories won her former seat by 4,426 votes, less than the number secured by Ms Webbe.

In Birmingham Perry Barr, Labour's Khalid Mahmood lost to independent Ayoub Khan by 507 votes.

Meanwhile, independent candidates who made the conflict in Gaza central to their campaign won in Dewsbury and Batley, as well as Blackburn, which both previously had healthy Labour majorities.

Other senior Labour figures in areas with large Muslim populations only narrowly held their seats after seeing their majorities eaten away.

The newly elected Labour MP for Coventry South, Zarah Sultana, said her party's position on Gaza was a "stain on its record" and, while the party had "moved in the right direction", it "took a long time to get there".

David Lammy - who could be set to become Labour's foreign secretary - told the BBC that his party would "work with partners to seek Palestinian recognition" in power.

Labour peer Ayesha Hazarika said analysts should be "slightly careful" about "lumping everyone from a Muslim background into having the same view".

She told BBC Radio 4 that there may have been "more to it than Gaza" in some areas, with "other local community politics" at play.

In Ilford North, independent candidate Leanne Mohamad, who is the granddaughter of Palestinian refugees, was just 528 votes behind Mr Streeting.

In Birmingham Ladywood, shadow justice secretary Shabana Mahmood held off a challenge from independent candidate and lawyer Akhmed Yakoob, who has a large following on TikTok.

However, her majority fell from more than 32,000 to 3,421.

Similarly Jess Phillips, who quit the Labour frontbench to vote for a Gaza ceasefire in Parliament last year, also saw her majority slashed from 13,141 to just 693.

Jody McIntyre, who stood for Mr Galloway's Workers Party of Britain, came second.

Ms Phillips faced shouts and booing as she gave her speech after the result, describing the campaign as "the worst election I have ever stood in" and claiming her activists had faced intimidation.

In Bethnal Green and Stepney, in east London, shadow small business minister Rushnara Ali, who was defending a majority of more than 31,000, beat independent candidate Ajmal Masroor by just 1,689 votes.

At his own count, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer faced heckles of "Free Palestine" and saw his majority cut, with pro-Gaza independent Andrew Feinsten coming second with 7,312 votes.

In Islington North, his predecessor as Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, retained his seat as an independent, after being suspended from the party over his response to a report on antisemitism in Labour.

Mr Corbyn beat the Labour candidate by more than 7,000 votes.

However, in Rochdale, Labour's Paul Waugh ousted Workers Party leader Mr Galloway, just months after he won the seat in a by-election dominated by the Gaza conflict.

Labour has faced growing pressure over its stance on the conflict, since Israel launched a military campaign in response to Hamas's unprecedented attack on 7 October.

In February Labour called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza but critics said the party was too slow to reach that position.

In its manifesto, Labour has committed to recognising a Palestinian state.

Last year, Sir Keir was criticised after appearing to say Israel had the "right" to cut off water and energy to Gaza.

He later clarified that he meant only that the country had a right to self-defence.
