Rustdesk started as an open-source alternative to TeamViewer. Now, it offers more than just remote desktop access, making it handy for casual self-hosting.

With no need for (dyn)DNS, port forwarding, or a VPN, you can get:

  • Remote terminal
  • File transfer
  • Tunneling (similar to SSH port forwarding)
  • Remote desktop

I think it’s a solid choice if you have a simple one-server setup.

Almost looks like a collage. I like it! Cool picture!

No, I'm not! What even is an argument? Who decides that?

I'll write it down as if I was talking to a 6 year old, because it sounds like your mental development might have stopped there.

Try to follow these 3 steps, OK?

  1. Think of the artist: Imagine a person who makes something, like a painting or a song. This person is called an artist.

  2. See the Art: The artist makes something beautiful, like a colorful picture or a fun song. This is called their art.

  3. Two Different Things: The artist and their art are two separate things. Just because someone made a painting, it doesn't mean everything about that person is good or bad.

Did that help you understand? Or are these steps confusing? Do you see that your comment was extremely dumb?

It's becoming very difficult to live if you can't seperate a person from their work.

Compared to a reasonable, empathic person

Acutally I think you made a big error in this analysis

I think the majority of voters support this behaviour. Most people would gladly give away their privacy for the promise that the bad other (be it racial, economical, religious, ... whomever you want to scapegoat) will be hurt, too.

there's not a huge amount of tech coming out of there.

That's opportunity! Glass halve full :) When it comes to renting infrastructure, there's plenty of options in Latam and Asia. I haven't looked at Africa to be honest.

Asia - they're definitely not any better

Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea are in asia too. It's not just China and Vietnam.

significant problems

The lack of free speech laws in EU is also a very big problem. EU cares very little for the individual's rights.

Latam, asia, africa?

Better to have lived a short life outside an office than to live to be a 100 spending 45 years in an office.

That's a choice you can still make today. What's keeping you from doing so?

[–] iii@mander.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a bad, hurtful joke, fyi

Governments all around EU, as well as the EU itself, are fighting hard against privacy, free thought and communications.

If you or your company stores user's personal information, make sure to use tech infrastructure from outside the EU!

Given that context, can you see how the people who want to stop putting holes in the boat would get frustrated with the people putting holes in the boat

Yes. Can you see how starting to namecall like a toddler is a bad plan? Now you destroy all possibility of cooperation, and the boat is still sinking. It makes things worse!

would be baffled by someone more concerned about the descriptive pejorative than they are by the other guys putting holes in the boats?

Let's say a boat is sinking. There's people making holes and there's toddlers screaming and shouting and kicking everyone in sight. Can you see how a reasonable person would see both as an annoying hinderance that make things worse, not better? How one group telling they don't like the other group is useless and frustrating childish behaviour - the boat is sinking, remember?

Your whole plan is to show them how things would be better

Yes. Work on technology and policy others will want to copy for their own benefit. It's the only thing that's going to work.

The growth in solar power production, for example, isn't because it's green. It's because it's a cheaper way of producing power in many situations. That's all that is.

The current methodology of bullying is not working, even doing the reverse. Emissions are currently at an all time high, and rising. Your plan is to keep doing that same thing, antagonize the majority of the world, and expect a different outcome?

Surprise: the highest taxed country in the world managed to increase taxes!

At a certain moment you don't feel the pain anymore. It's not that it's gone. You just got used to it. You lose connection. With your emotions. With your body. With your sense of self.

Then you let go.

What signals do you look for? Do you decide based on reason or instinct?

Summary:

STEM participation in Flemish secondary schools fell for the fourth consecutive year, reaching its lowest level in ten years. Last school year 35.5% of pupils chose a STEM track, down from 36.44% the year before and below the government target of over 40% by 2030. The decline continues despite more than a decade of intensive promotion. Employers' group Voka warns this hurts capacity for addressing major challenges like climate and digitalisation — six of ten shortage occupations are STEM roles, Voka chair Frank Beckx says. Ann Caluwaerts (Imec, STEM platform) calls the trend "a time bomb under our prosperity."

Summary:

VAF will lose €734,000 in funding, affecting its Media and Game funds while Film Fund allocations remain unchanged. The cut represents about 10% of the roughly €7 million annual Flemish dotations the fund has received in recent years.

An additional €169,000 from the Education cabinet for the Game Fund may also be removed, further reducing support for games. VAF and the minister’s office are in discussions amid a difficult regional budgetary situation.

The Flemish government expects the expanded audiovisual stimulation scheme, which forces media companies active in Belgium to subsidise Belgian media—which now includes videoplatforms like YouTube, Instagram and TikTok—to partly compensate. The minister says the new scheme will yield €26 million extra for the sector, with over €11 million earmarked for VAF.

Summary:

The Flemish government, led by Environment Minister Jo Brouns (CD&V), plans to significantly increase the fees for citizens wishing to appeal against approved building permits. Currently set at €200, the fee is proposed to rise to between €400 and €500. This move aims to deter misuse of the appeal process and expedite permit procedures.

Brouns emphasizes that the increase is intended to signal that only serious appeals should be filed, while still allowing individuals to challenge permits if they experience genuine personal harm. The government acknowledges that processing such appeals can cost society around €5,000 per case, highlighting the disparity between the appeal costs and the societal expenses involved.

Despite the anticipated revenue of only €1 million from this measure, it is viewed as a step towards a more streamlined permitting process, a key promise of the Flemish government. The complexity and lengthy nature of obtaining permits have been problematic for developers, compounded by the ability of various stakeholders to contest permits, leading to protracted legal battles.

Additionally, the Flemish government aims to simplify and accelerate permitting procedures, although previous attempts have faced setbacks from the Constitutional Court. Recent rulings have mandated that provinces will now review local permit applications to prevent conflicts of interest, ensuring that municipal construction projects can proceed without interruption.
