BUSY and I've been paying attention to the news less and less. I have to.
That's the thing- you only need to have an account with one instance, and you can follow others from your "home" instance.
But I bring this up to bolster your point- Mastodon feels "clunky" because their onboarding process for new users is severely lacking, in my opinion.
It is offputting. It is intimidating. And that is a turnoff for a lot of people.
I like the way you think!
And especially the existence of places like the library where you can use a computer for free, makes it even wilder.

An absolutely strange hill to die on, and may be an indicator of a bigger hissy fit in the future.
As someone who is the first to go "yeah, but so-n-so does this-n-that," I needed this reminder of the thin line between "being informative" and "being a killjoy."
Caveats are nice, but I still shouldn't discourage folx from making better choices.
