I finally got around to migrate PdfDing from github to Codeberg. Hopefully, I will see some of you over there.

PdfDing is a PDF manager, viewer and editor that you can host yourself. It offers a seamless user experience on multiple devices. It's designed be to be minimal, fast, and easy to set up using Docker.

it's been some time since I have posted an update about PdfDing, the selfhosted PDF manager, viewer and editor offering a seamless user experience on multiple devices. It’s designed be to be minimal, fast, and easy to set up using Docker. You can find the repository here.

Since my last post the following features were added to the app:

• Share PDF collections with the public with a link and QR code. Optionally, shares can be protected with a password and a deletion date. Until now only single PDFs could be shared.
• Use bulk actions for managing multiple PDFs at once. Available bulk actions include adding, deleting, starring + tag and collection adjustments. It's no longer necessary to waste time by processing one PDF after another.
• Multi-Factor Authentication. Users that aren't using SSO can now secure their accounts by using a second factor (webauthn + TOPT)
• Other than this there are several minor UI and quality of life improvements that (hopefully) make the app a bit more beautiful and easier to use.

If you are using PdfDing I would appreciate it greatly if you would take a couple of minutes to complete the small survey. This will help me to improve PdfDing in a way that benefits you most.

Last but not least I am quite happy about the nice and steady growth of PdfDing. By now it has almost 300k image pulls and over 1.7k stars. Since the popularity is increasing but not exploding I am not overwhelmed with feature requests and the general maintenance. It also means that I am spared from the attack of AI slop PRs that target more popular projects.

I am pleased to announce the release v1.5.0 of PdfDing. PdfDing is a selfhosted PDF manager, viewer and editor offering a seamless user experience on multiple devices. It's designed be to be minimal, fast, and easy to set up using Docker. You can find the repository here.

Important: Before updating, make sure to take a backup! The internal changes in this release are quite substantial and while everything is thoroughly tested, problems could still arise when performing the migrations.

The highlight of this release is the introduction of workspaces and collections. Compared to the already present tag system, they offer way greater flexibility and take the management of your PDFs to the next level. Implementing these features was quite the work as the changes required a lot of refactoring and rewriting of the existing logic. This resulted in over 70 new commits (out of a total 500), so this is by far the most for a single release. I am very pleased with the result and you hopefully too.

Furthermore, the popularity of the project keeps growing continually. We have now over 1500 Stars on github, almost 200k image pulls, over 80 forks and five contributors. Given that the project is quite niche I am still a bit blown away by this level of popularity. At the same time I am also happy that it's not too popular as it keeps the maintenance overhead manageable... Thanks for the support and onward to further organic and sustainable growth!

I am the creator of PdfDing and in the spirit of the season I will match your donations to open source projects.The past year has been a good year, both personally and for PdfDing. The project's popularity kept steadily rising to around 1.4k stars on github and 150k image pulls. Additionally,it is receiving a grant from the NGI Zero Commons Fund. Given that and that I feel like I don't give back enough to the awesome open source projects I use, I will match your donations under the following rules:

• In total I will donate up to 500$.
• For every donator I will match up to 10$. I want to animate as many people as possible to donate to their favorite projects and by using this cap I can match at least 50 donations. Obviously, you can still donate more than 10$ :)
• You can donate to open source projects of your liking (except your own projects). However it would be cool to not only see big projects like Immich receiving donations.
• In turn I'll donate to open source projects of my choice. These projects will be: 1. Projects that I use in my private and professional life, 2. Projects that are a dependency of PdfDing or somehow helped/inspired its development. Obviously, I will NOT donate to any projects I am affiliated with.
• In order to save fees I might combine donations. Example: one user donate 3$, another 2$ and yet another 5$. I'll combine these 3 donations to a single 10$ donation.
• I will post screenshots or links as proof my donations.
• You will need to post a screenshot or a link as proof of your donations. I will post my proof as a reply.
• I will do a similar post on the self-hosted community on reddit. The 500$ I will match are both for reddit and lemmy.

just a quick update regarding PdfDing as this was one of the most requested features. I am pleased to announce that PdfDing now has support for adding signatures to PDFs. The signatures are stored on the server, so they can be accessed from any device. Fun fact: As some of you know PdfDing is receiving a grant from the NGI Zero Commons Fund. By chance the signature on the grant memorandum was the first real signature with PdfDing.

In addition to this, PdfDing now has a dedicated website and documentation. As a non frontend dev I still feel like I have no idea what I am doing with regards to the frontend, so it's a mind boggling that I have now created a web app and a website that I find aesthetically pleasing. Obviously, it has been a big help to take inspiration from the design of many other great self-hosted apps.

Last week PdfDing was selected to receive a grant from the NGI Zero Commons Fund. This fund is dedicated to helping deliver, mature and scale new internet commons across the whole technology spectrum and is amongst others funded by the European Commission. The exact sum of the grant still needs to be discussed, but obviously I am very stocked to have been selected and need to share it with the community.

PdfDing's features include:

• Seamless browser based PDF viewing on multiple devices. Remembers current position - continue where you stopped reading
• Stay on top of your PDF collection with multi-level tagging, starring and archiving functionalities
• Edit PDFs by adding comments, highlighting and drawings

This fund is dedicated to helping deliver, mature and scale new internet commons across the whole technology spectrum and is amongst others funded by the European Commission. The exact sum of the grant still needs to be discussed, but obviously I am very stocked to have been selected in this funding round as one of the few projects that can be selfhosted. It's also great timing, because the past half year has been very busy both in my private and professional life, but in the coming months I finally have time again to continue improving PdfDing.
