Best speech I've ever heard of an FDP politician

[–] parson0@startrek.website 6 points 3 days ago

I will fight to defend our rights to express ourselves, love who we want, be who we want.

The biggest and most immediate threat to these values are our governments. Implementing surveillance policies under the disguise of protecting children, while failing to bring those to justice that are actually harming them. (Epstein is the current example, the abuse in the church has been known for decades more)

Corrupt politicians are representing the ultra rich and multinationals instead of the people, funneling our tax money into their own pockets and blaming immigrants and asylum seekers when underfunded infrastructure fails. Fueling the fire that enables the political shift to the right without any regard for the consequences.

In short... the answer is NO, there is no government worth fighting for. There is no government that represents me.

100% and it's fully normalised now, I've even switched to UK English spelling myself and on all my devices.

My parents' iMacs are running Linux and everyone is drinking local Kola. My focus is now on encouraging friends and family to join in and helping where I can. (mostly the tech stuff) I also like to throw US and Israeli products to the back of the shelves in supermarkets. Even made some 'Buy European' stickers to put over barcodes.

They MUST have free child care. And MUST send their kids to public schools. Only then will the systems be improved for everyone

Had a quick look and it seems to be easy if I take the fridge online, that would be a deal breaker so will need to do some digging about just keeping it connected locally

The fridge has wifi and an app for all those times when you're on the road and feel the urge to change your fridge/freezer settings. I haven't used it yet and am hesitant to let it go online. But I'm hoping I can still connect the fridge to my wifi locally and control it that way. From there I hope If (sunny) (set freezer to -24C) ELSE (set freezer to -18C) will work.

Easier said than done, but it's the only way to find peace.

Also signing people up for spam mail can give some temporary satisfaction.

Hey! I do this by setting my freezer temp to the lowest possible when my panels produce excess electricity. Then back to normal for the night, the 6C difference is enough to not use additional power until the sun comes up again.

One day I will automate this.... one day

Voting is a good reason to keep the citizenship.

In regards of taxes, if your place of residence collects more than the US would, nothing is actually owed. In the EU most (if not all) countries have much higher tax rates than the US, so the only "crime" would be the failure to file. Not sure if this is why the folks I know are getting away with this.

But generally yes, my friends are not planing to go back and much prefer paying higher taxes in return for accessible healthcare and public transport.

Londoners have a right to defend themselves

In my circle of friends none of the US Americans living abroad file their tax returns and haven't done so for many years.. especially if you're not planing to move back to the US, I really don't see the need to continue compliance with the IRS or renounce a citizenship. Keep that passport and keep voting. Throw dog shit over the embassy fence.
