That's been happening to me for years, I've even had iPhones with noticeable scratches on the screen straight out of the box.
So I guess it looks like their quality has slipped if it's still happening.
I know people will say there's bound to be the odd one that slips through, but going from memory I've had 11 iPhones including reolacents for defective ones, and 6 had damage straight out of the box
