Oh I love Debian on the desktop! More a comment on the feeling of the OS being very concerned about downtime and stability, with minimal "surprises." Not a bad thing at all!

It's the computer equivalent of stopping the microwave when it's done but hasn't yet beeped.

When I used Arch I updated once and it removed the running kernel and its modules. So when I plugged in a webcam it didn't work, since the module was gone.

Not a catastrophe, but it was an off-putting user experience coming from Debian. Arch felt more like a desktop OS, Debian feels more like a server OS to me (updates generally warn/confirm when you need to restart services or the machine).

To each their own! Having more up to date stuff was a nice perk of running Arch, certainly.

Track placement matters more with vinyl, too (or tapes for that matter).

The song "Back in Black" is in the middle of album of the same name

but it's the first track of the second side on vinyl. Like you said, it's a part of the listening experience.

My toddler does that.

Yeah, they had a proper primary unlike the Dems with the incumbent situation. No one to blame but themselves here.

My sympathy for the Republican party is immeasurable (as in, too small to measure).

Trump (recently) received the nomination from his party, while Biden dropped out before the DNC. I could be wrong but I think it's a little more problematic for him to drop out, although perhaps that's just related to RNC self-imposed rules and not any actual laws.

My kiddo is just a toddler, but in our VHCOL area, at this age the only thing that really matters is childcare expenses. If we had family/grandparents taking care of them, the additional cost would be pretty minimal, in the scheme of things.

The max contribution to dependent FSA (tax free account for daycare) is a joke, less than 2mo of care.

The material things we've needed probably amount to less than one month of daycare expenses (diapers notwithstanding).

Saving for college, on the other hand...

Elon has stated his distaste for Apple, and seems to be taking it out on its users. Who are notoriously, well...dedicated. Oh, and there are viable alternatives to Xitter, both federated and not.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm sure I'm just too stupid to see how this is a Big Brain move here...

An ARM laptop that can run mainline Linux out of the box and performs at an M1 level or better would be phenomenal. Sign me up.

It can be extremely luxurious if you pay.

I'd rather get to my destination with my wallet still in tact, but you do you.

Can you not turn it into charcoal and bury it? I think that has a very long lifetime.
