Yeah, I agree with not liking people having that info, but ISPs do, unless you use VPN, and then the VPN does.

We just usually don't hear of that getting leaked from VPN providers since their reputation is on the line.

Data breach would also be a bummer. If a criminal group takes the time to breach a government database, I think it would be wasted effort to try black mailing people over porn access. Unless you're a priest. Then uh oh.

The way you get positive ID that can't be skirted is with government issues ID card with PKI. All US federal employees have ID cards issued by their department. It has certs that let you sign into computers, sign documents, etc. It's 2FA, card and a PIN.

Every driver in the US is supposed to have a driver's license. They just need to add PKI to them. Then you sign into a website with your DL and PIN. You'd never need a million accounts anymore. Caveats apply.

I spent some time reading a significant number of the replies, so I'll offer this as a suggestion for some of the repeated themes regarding overbearing political stance, decisive topics, etc:

  • encourage and support people discussing matters from an open perspective, trying to take a less decisive stance, or being open to different sides

  • encourage people and participate in conversation with people who show compassion or agree to disagree rather than write people off

  • ask questions instead of assuming

  • sometimes, opinions don't have to be right/wrong

  • opinions aren't facts

I would appreciate more people discussing things with these ideas in mind.

Between the echo chamber sentiment, and people's difficulty with empathy or accepting there could be other view points, it's hard to maneuver around hot topics and learn anything.

The extreme left sentiment has been repeatedly mentioned, but I'm honestly still hoping to learn other people's perspectives here.

Dude, I thought you were taking about spaetzle...

I appreciate that there's users and news that's not US. People here need more perspective than mainstream America.

This is what most of these people are talking about when they say viewpoints are critical and hateful.

People can have different viewpoints without being an ism/ist.

I don't understand why people can't differentiate or stop conflating opinions or perspectives with hate, violence, or something-ism.

Also, I am not advocating for hate, something-ism, killing, etc. Not everyone who doesn't agree with you is a fascist, hater, genocide supporter, etc. Not ever opinion on a matter is propaganda.

I also wish there was more enterprise focused IT community.

The self host is not a replacement for homelab or sysadm.

I can't even get good information security discussions @infosec.pub. I was hoping there'd be some security ninjas running around. Just a news bot.

I even think about mentioning enterprise Microsoft products, get evil capitalism lectured. I can't personally change the business world's IT paradigm. Business world...more lecture coming

I enjoy these threads. I have noticed people really hate two themes here: (1) internet censorship, and (2) people screwing with their porn :)

(I'm not a pornhub user, nor advocating for the internet censorship nonsense, just a devils advocate question for fun)

Pretend for a second it was reasonably feasible to enforce this, so I'm asking you to forget how the internet/VPNs/tons of options work :)

  • If a site like pornhub 'PROMISED' to not log any user data under threat of death, but all they did was run a query against some government database that verifies age >= 18, would you do it?

  • Also, the government database 'PROMISES' to not log the source of the age only verification queries, would you do it?

So, if you say no, is it because you believe there's no way each of those organizations would keep their word or something else?

I'm betting you're right. Hopefully they can crack that last inch holding us back from some sweet ass fusion power, or some kind of cancer+everything else miracle cure...

The pictures look cool anyway.

Well, since no one offered any suggestions on the actual cover letter content. Gotta start somewhere.

@lilypad@hexbear.net

You could also roll through linkedin and see other examples of resumes, but people usually tailor the cover letter to the job they are applying for.

I ask LLMs stuff all the time for a starting point, and then narrow my search so I don't go off entirely made up crap (if it did).

Here's some thoughts based on my life experience:

  • employers want people who show up. If you have a good work ethic, don't call in sick for BS reasons, then put in there that you care about being a contributor, you're reliable, and work in good-faith.

  • employers like people with soft skills (communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking). I don't think this is limited to information or office workers. Express that you can communicate and manage expectations with managers, coworkers, and you are a problem solver instead of a drone who asks a leader for help for every problem (unless that's what they want of you).

  • employers will likely appreciate if you tailor the letter to their business. Look up what they do, what they care about, and what their mission is (also if they have corporate mission statements, value statements, ethics statements, etc). Their mission isn't just to make money (yes it is), but to be the best maker/doer of their product/industry. Express how you can help them accomplish their mission and add value to the company.

Since you mentioned self-study, watch videos about these things if you want to be bored, but ahead of your peers.

I bet you get interviews by including these things and making sure to you spell check. It's amazing how many people don't care enough to check over their application, which is an instant red flag for hiring. Also, there's shit tons of services that offer resume reviews.

Good luck!
