"But the car was in manual mode during the crash"

I’ve been wondering if this is already happening.

If, in the US, a bunch of masked guys not wearing any identifying badge or uniforms jump out of an unmarked van to abduct people, those guys are going to get shot at some point.

Still on my standard issue 11. Few scuffs and scratches on the edges but otherwise still working great.

Totally with you, we run them into the ground before replacing.

I’d wager the root CA certificates on the device are expired since it hasn’t been updated in ages. So it can’t trust certs signed with the new root CAs.

Persona 5 still, if you can believe it. It appears to be a very long game I’m noticing 100 hours in, but I’m still enjoying it and invested in the plot.

Is this gonna be another huge handheld?

Haha, it’s all I do. Anything I spend time or money on takes away from something else, be it sleep, chores, or enriching hobbies.

I’m no better as I’m using iCloud mail included in my Apple subscription. But I have my own domain there so I can move to another provider such as Soverin (had my eye on this one for a while) or something.

I can’t be bothered self-hosting email servers and having delivery issues etc. because it’s not a major provider. There are other tech projects I’d rather spend my free time on.

Vendor lock-in with email is thankfully minimal when using your own domain. All domain-related configuration is outside the email provider’s control so as long as you back up your important emails they have no leverage over you.

Another sign to get your own domain for important email adresses (not to make the assumption that you know how or can afford it). If my email provider blocks me I will just take my domain and find a different one.

Been seeing so many creators getting locked out of their gmails because of YouTube suspensions etc. Feels too precarious to leave it all in one company’s hands when all your important logins and contacts are tied to it.

Difference is you could vote in the democrats and protest the genocide on the streets every single night without being disappeared into a concentration camp.

I agree on your other point though. Seems all our options for voting are capitalism and capitalism turbo. I’m European but we also have non-optional capitalism where every election cycle we get to choose whether to keep on as usual or to privatize half of our remaining public services and get the same choice next time.

Yeah, it’s generally up to the publishers if they want to use DRM on Steam or not.

Still GOG lets you download offline installers. Then you can archive them however you please. It’s probably worth something for someone not keen on borrowing digital licenses. Only real thing you’re giving up is Steam achievements.

My experience with it on Switch is great. Couldn’t tell it apart from PC honestly and it is well suited for handheld play. Guess it all comes down to availability of cartridges. One thing with the cartridge though is that when Nintendo kills off the patch servers and you decide to play again, it will most likely be whatever version is on the cartridge (still better than no game!). Normally this doesn’t bother me one bit, but this game has gotten a lot of updates adding a significant amount of content. An archived installer from a version you actually played will probably feel more worthwhile to revisit in 15 years or whatever.

No idea how available they are but I know they exist. I also know many releases on Switch were made in limited numbers and thus are really expensive on the secondhand market.

GOG also has it DRM-free if you decide to go the PC route.

I’ve recently moved my whole game library over to Linux and stopped dual booting. Everything runs great on Linux, I just run it through Steam’s Proton layer.

Therein lies the problem. Even my non-Steam games I run through Steam since it’s so convenient with Proton. My experience with using straight up wine, winetricks, Lutris etc. had been much more clunky in comparison and less reliable for getting things running.

While it’s working fine for now, what do I do if I’m offline and Steam decides this is one of those days offline mode doesn’t work? What if I get banned from Steam?

Has anyone had any luck replicating their Proton setup outside of Steam? Or simply just running a Proton game outside of Steam after getting it set up using Steam?

Hi, I’ve got a fairly modest computer by today’s standard and I’m looking to upgrade the GPU and perhaps also the CPU. Mostly I use it for playing games and your other typical PC tasks, not much video editing and stuff of that sort. Mostly MMOs, sandbox games, RPGs, CRPGs and the occasional sim or 4X.

At the time I’m having a blast with Baldur’s Gate 3 (me and everyone else), and it runs fine (albeit with a fairly hot GPU topping out around 89 C, but ambient is around 35 tbf) on High settings. Only thing I noticed is some occasionally long turn times of enemies “thinking” during combat. Also been meaning to play Elden Ring but my PS5’s GPU died early in the game (just after console warranty expired), so I’m tempted to get it for PC.

Currently got:

  • Asus Prime B450M-A
  • Ryzen 5 2600X
  • MSI RX 580 8GB
  • Corsair DDR4 16 GB (2x8GB dual-channel) 3200 memory
  • 650 W PSU

I think the biggest performance gain would come from upgrading the GPU. Where I had something like a 6700 XT (currently at 330 € here) in mind.

Is it nonsensical to also upgrade the CPU to a 5800X3D (currently 320 €) instead of just waiting a couple more years and going with whatever platform is current then? Not interested in buying all new memory nor a higher-rated PSU now. Thinking the mentioned CPU can squeeze at least five more years or so out of this motherboard before I need a bigger upgrade. Perhaps it would also help with turn times?

Probably around 150 € can be recouped by selling my old parts once I have flashed the BIOS and no longer need the old CPU.
