The messages, which do not include communications between SPD officials except where the mayor’s office was included, show two things. First, that the mayor’s office dithered and debated whether Wilson herself should go to the scene of the shooting for three hours before she finally went to Seattle Center, partly in response to TV reporters criticizing her for not being there.

And second, that the primary reason for the delay in information, as well as almost all of the delay in holding a press conference that night, was that SPD delayed the release of information repeatedly, withholding any new information information from the public and press until the press conference finally took place around 11pm.

SPD, the messages show, knew critical details about the shooting, including the fact that it was not a random mass shooting or terrorist event within an hour of the shooting—that is, before 7:30pm—but did not put any of that information out broadly until after 1:00 in the morning on July 27.

The messages include texts from mayoral communications staffer Jonah Spangenthal-Lee to SPD Chief Operating Officer Sarah Smith asking her why SPD had not provided any information since a tweet warning the public of a shooting with “multiple shooting victims” at Seattle Center at 6:29pm. “Sarah, where is SPD”s statement?” Spangenthal-Lee wrote at 8:36. “It’s been two hours since you guys have posted anything? Even some tweets at this point…”

A few minutes later, Spangenthal-Lee told other mayoral staffers in an internal Teams chat, “It’s fucking embarrassing that SPD has waited HOURS to put anything out. … I’m just saying this is a massive fucking disaster and hit to public trust.”

The global shift, she continued, can be traced to one common cause: the increased agency of women, who during the last century became increasingly able to opt out of traditional family roles to pursue other options, such as education and careers.

“Wherever you get increased agency, you get reduction in the birth rate,” said Goldin. “The central cause arises when women have autonomy and have the ability to be educated, to have occupations and careers.”

This can lead to conflict with men, who are more comfortable with traditional roles. “Men don’t want to give up what they had in the past,” Goldin said.

CHS reported here in July as a judge denied a bid by a group of neighbors and nearby property owners to close the park over complaints of public nudity, sexual activity, and disorder.

In his decision, Judge Samuel Chung sided with the City of Seattle and Friends of Denny Blaine in keeping the two-acre park on the shores of Lake Washington open — and nude — calling Denny Blaine “a limited natural resource that must be shared by the residents of the neighborhood and the Park’s visitors.”

The decision came with caveats after several findings that the court said justified the neighbors’ claims around lewd acts and criminal activity at the park. In the ruling, the judge said the city must implement and manage a previously approved abatement plan, and “develop and implement a park specific user plan and code of conduct to address overcrowding, safety, and prohibited and acceptable behaviors.”

The new guideline review runs parallel to broader community sessions starting late September regarding long-term park investments and improvements.

Although Flock Safety noted that the company had partnered with Ulta Beauty back in July 2025, the general public seems to have been made aware after a petition by Ultra Violet, a gender justice nonprofit that “works to create a more inclusive world for women and gender expansive people,” says Jenna Sherman, Ultra Violet’s campaign director whose work focuses on the intersection of tech and gender. The petition demands “that Ulta sever all ties with Flock and immediately shut off Flock cameras in Ulta parking lots.”

A source familiar with the matter confirmed to Allure that Ulta Beauty does use Flock’s cameras in a limited number of locations as a measure against theft. Currently, there are ALPRs at less than 1% of Ulta Beauty’s over 1,500 stores, all in landlord-owned parking lots which require permission for the cameras to be installed. The source says that Ulta Beauty “complies with all applicable laws and strictly controls access to information collected by cameras.” On multiple occasions, law enforcement officers have used Flock footage to identify and ultimately arrest people accused of stealing from Ulta Beauty stores. Allure was not able to independently confirm Ultra Violet’s claim that Ulta is one of Flock’s “biggest” customers, though it is a retail partner that Flock has mentioned in case studies.

For Sherman, the fact that a company that largely caters to women would use ALPR technology was particularly concerning. She points to reports that Flock has been used to track people seeking abortions, protestors, and immigrants, as well as allegations that members of law enforcement have used Flock footage to stalk or harass women. (Flock Safety largely refutes these claims and has removed some states from its National Lookup database.) “[The use of ALPR] really plays into this model of manufactured consent that women and gender expansive people and LGBTQ people already have to face in so many areas of our life,” Sherman says. “We have our consent taken away from us constantly, not just sexually, but in day to day interactions … We’re being told that we have to be okay with driving into a parking lot and having our license plate scanned whether we know it or not.”

Thornton was on an American Airlines flight back in May from Charlotte to L.A. ... when a passenger eyed his laptop and saw him in a disturbing chatroom. The passenger tells TMZ, she saw images and texts that made it appear it was a chatroom for pedophiles.

One of the messages she saw said, "Couple of cute boys and a hot little girl." Another read, "All-you-can-eat Boyfett." referring to a restaurant where they could find underage kids.

And there's another message references "CP," which the passenger believed stood for child porn.

As a result, the passenger notified a flight attendant and shared these photos with the crew. We're told the captain then notified authorities, and law enforcement met the plane when it landed at LAX.

We're told authorities questioned Thornton and he was then free to leave.

In some ways, filmmaker Sofia Coppola and painter Lisa Yuskavage are an odd match. Yuskavage proudly hails from a working-class family in a hardscrabble Philadelphia neighborhood, while Coppola is… a Coppola. But what they have in common (in addition to Irish and Italian ancestry) is an abiding interest in feminine jouissance—audience expectations be damned. (When Yuskavage debuted her candy-colored paintings of perky-breasted women in the 1990s, a critic described them as “visual stink bombs.”)

It’s not surprising, then, that both artists quickly understood what the other was up to. The two have been friends for decades, constantly circling one another in New York’s creative scenes. They have both spent their careers making art inflected by girlhood, a preoccupation that some have mistaken for superficiality. An exhibition at the Petit Trianon at the Château de Versailles (on view through January 2027) brings together collages, costumes, and other elements of the creative process, while a documentary chronicling the shoot, directed by her late mother, Eleanor Coppola, was picked up by Mubi. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has received an emergency appeal filed by Lindsay Clancy's legal team, according to CBS, the BBC's US partner.

Clancy's attorney Kevin Reddington hopes the high court will intervene and halt plans by judge William Sullivan to declare a mistrial after the jury said for the third time this week it has not reached a unanimous decision.

If the Supreme Judicial Court does not intervene, a mistrial will be declared. If the court does choose to step in, it's unclear what would unfold next.

I’ll bite: how about the fact that frontman Josh Homme’s ex-wife Brody Dalle testified in court that he head-butted her so hard that she “saw stars” and said he had fantasised about killing her? Or that he kicked a female photographer in the face? It’s certainly not what anyone’s talking about as part of Homme’s friendly neighbourhood rock star image rehabilitation: duetting on Shania Twain’s new album, taking the couch on Celebrity Gogglebox, teatime BBC 6 Music interviews.

Homme and Dalle clearly had a complicated relationship: he allegedly tried to throw her boyfriend off a balcony; he claims that she was violent towards him; both have taken out restraining orders against one another; Homme has full custody of their kids after Dalle’s boyfriend was found to have forged her signature on an application for a restraining order. Homme has recently talked about coming through a dark period, including successful treatment for cancer, and getting a handle on his vices. Nevertheless, there is clear footage of him brutally kicking the camera of photographer Chelsea Lauren back into her face, which he acknowledged in an apology video, and court testimony from Dalle alleging that a drunk Homme told her “I want to fucking strangle you right now” on one occasion, and head-butted her on another.

Their situation shares resonances with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s messy relationship breakdown, which prompted a British judge to deem that the Sun was in fact accurate in labelling Depp a “wife-beater” despite his libel claim against them; although a US jury ruled in his favour against Heard, who was found guilty of defamation. You only have to see the grim trailer for Ebenezer, Depp’s forthcoming Scrooge trauma plot movie, to see how much any of this really damaged his career. “It’s good to be back,” Depp-as-Scrooge tee-hees in his first spoken scene. Subtext, as Garth Marenghi told us, is for cowards. Text appears proclaiming “the master of misfits returns”; the entire aesthetic seems skimmed from former Depp hits Sweeney Todd, Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward Scissorhands. As someone says in the comments: “This entire trailer is just, ‘You like Johnny Depp right?’” You could sum up most of the rest of the comments as: we sure do! Nothing says future Christmas classic like big-budget reputation laundering.

Miss World Uganda’s dress during the Miss World competition paid a special tribute to motherhood.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, in Vietnam, the contestants wore couture designs as part of the Vietnam Beauty Fashion Fest’s 17th edition, “Soul of Heritage.”

Miss World Uganda’s Elle Muhoza wore a custom look by designer Keesha Abdallah titled “The Layers of Life,” which was meant to represent the seven layers that doctors cut through to perform a C-section.

The gown featured layers of white, yellow, pink and red fabrics, modeled after an illustration Abdallah found of the C-section layers: skin, fat, fascia, rectus muscles, peritoneum, uterus muscle and the amniotic sac.

“The concept was inspired by the layers encountered during a C-section and, more broadly, by the extraordinary journey of bringing life into the world,” the designer explained on Instagram. “Each color and layer was chosen to represent a stage, a texture, or a transition within that story — not to represent a particular race.”

She continued, “And that is precisely why we called it ‘The Layers of Life.’ Because life itself does not belong to one race, one country, or one colour. Life has no colour. Life is universal.”

Cherise Doyley said she wanted to deliver naturally after having three previous C-sections. Instead, she said nurses brought a tablet to her hospital room, where she discovered a judge, attorneys, doctors and hospital staff were on a Zoom call about whether she should undergo the surgery.

The court hearing lasted about three hours while Doyley remained in active labor.

“I didn’t even know what this court hearing was about,” Doyley said. “And when I found out it was to give me a C-section against my will, it was like, I was floored. I was just dumbfounded.”

Doyley said the experience was traumatic and dehumanizing.

“Honestly, Tiffany, it was one of the most dehumanizing, traumatic, scary experiences I’ve ever had in my life,” she said.

At least three Tacoma restaurants announced last week that they would cut ties with E9 Brewing Co. after learning that the brewery’s owners, brothers John and Lucas Xitco, gave money as individuals in June to Let’s Go Washington, a PAC formed in 2022 by Redmond-based hedge-fund founder Brian Heywood that has sponsored three initiatives — around transgender athletes, the “parents’ bill of rights” and the “millionaires tax” — for the 2026 general election.

The Xitcos said their June donation was solely in support of the campaign to repeal the millionaires tax. The discovery of their donation, readily available in Public Disclosure Commission data, landed via local political organizer Zev Cook, who is a former Tacoma City Council candidate and co-chair of the Tacoma chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. In a video posted to her Instagram account Aug. 23, she pointed out the Xitcos’ contributions and said, “Here is a list of Tacoma businesses that are helping fund Let’s Go Washington’s anti-trans initiatives.” She specifically named E9 and Asado, which are co-owned by the brothers under the umbrella of X Group Restaurants, and Frisko Freeze, the historic burger shack which John Xitco and his son Nico Xitco bought in 2023 and restored in 2024.

By the end of the week, restaurants including Corbeau, Dusty’s Hideaway and a local Dickey’s Barbecue Pit franchise said on social media they would stop carrying E9 beers. Dusty’s also shared that it would donate earnings from its remaining E9 inventory to a fundraiser for a transgender employee to receive top surgery.

In a phone call this week, John Xitco strongly disputed the characterization that he, his family or his businesses were “anti-trans” and expressed disappointment at the rhetoric that quickly permeated local social media. He stressed that he and his brother had donated $1,000 and $250, respectively, on June 10 through an email fundraising campaign specifically about repealing the millionaires tax, a 9.9% levy on households earning more than $1 million annually set to start in 2028. He said they were not familiar with Let’s Go Washington at the time and were unaware of the PAC’s other initiatives until last week.
