he F-Droid app was created in 2009 in the early days of Android and lots of its code is still that old. While the ecosystem has seen many drastic shifts, the F-Droid community heroically kept the app alive with band aids and chewing gum.

Therefore, we are especially thrilled to announce that the Mobifree programme of the Next Generation Internet initiative agreed to fund this monumental effort. With their support, we aim to modernize the F-Droid app with a focus on the user interface to make the app easier to use and more appealing especially for new users. At the same time, the modernization should make it easier and more attractive to contribute to the app while also making it easier for the maintainers to review and merge external contributions due to better test coverage and less code entanglement.

The rewrite will be exclusively in Kotlin and use Compose for the UI while using modern architectural patterns that will make the app easier to maintain and more fun to contribute to. It will also allow for a responsive UI that adapts to the available screen size, be it a phone, a foldable, a tablet or even a desktop screen

Hi folks,

After numerous feedback and hundreds of changes, I'm happy to share that my project, Octopi Launcher, is ready for open testing.

Below are some key features, with more to come:

  • Foldables support - have totally different layouts on each screen
  • (Auto scrolling) widget stacks
  • Float/ pin a widget on top of home screens
  • Display drawer icons as tiles
  • App drawer folders and favorite apps
  • Assign a nickname to an app (e.g. searching "ff" can instantly launch Firefox)
  • Launch different apps using swipes on an icon
  • Icon pack and shortcut support
  • Resize individual home screen icons
  • Index bar and reachability mode for drawer
  • Option to hide status and navigation bars
  • Notification badges
  • Private space support
  • Lock home screen layout
  • Haptic effects

Shane has also done a video review on a slightly older version, which gives an idea what this launcher can do.

Have a great day!

  • Identity Check was spotted on a OnePlus 13 running the Android 16 beta.
  • The feature is expected to arrive on more Android phones with the Android 16 update coming later this year.
  • It requires a change to Android's biometric prompt code, which can't be completed without a full update.

When enabled, Identity Check requires biometric authentication to view or modify certain sensitive parts on your Android smartphone. A fingerprint or face unlock is required for the following actions when your device is outside of a trusted location:

  • Accessing saved passkeys and app passwords
  • Changing PIN, pattern, or password, and turning off Find My

For these actions, biometric authentication is mandatory outside of trusted locations with Identity Check enabled — a password, PIN, or pattern won't work as an alternative. This is intended to prevent people from hijacking your Google account or other online accounts in the event your phone is lost or stolen, even if the bad actor knows your password.
