My first gaming purchase as a kid was the old school yellow big brick GameBoy with no backlight. I had to wait a further 2 months before I bought a game I actually wanted - Pokemon Red. I had found £20 on the ground and combined with my allowance my mother took me to the nearest Game shop. The drive home was dark, and I couldn't see a god damned thing on the screen, but I was pumped.

Now I will no doubt get downvoted into oblivion or even banned for stating this, but I have refused to give Nintendo my money for years because of the money grabbing bastards that they have become. Their inability to put their games on other platforms, or hardware that can handle more than 30fps, combined with their refusal to ever put their games on sale puts them in the same courtyard as Activision and EA for me.

For around twenty years now I have refused to buy anything they sell. This is just my personal vendetta against a company that i feel should have and could have done better, this is in no means a dig at Nintendo fans, But theyre going to downvote me anyway.

Their games however have a place in my heart, and the nostalgia is strong in this one (most of their money comes from this)

Well fast forward a little, I just got my Steam Deck (512gb OLED) this week and I learned how to emulate everything from N64 up to the Switch. Some of the games I played today I played religiously as a kid from Mario Kart to Zelda, with Super Mario 64 being the biggest culprit... I was trying to speed run this game before the Internet was a thing.

Up until now i have had no need for a steam deck and in truth some time had passed since the launch, so I was sort of holding out for the Steam Deck 2 whenever that may be. I have watched the entire time wishing i had a reason to buy but adult me just couldnt find one.

Well I just got a job as a truck driver, and il be staying out overnight occasionally, so i splashed some cash on this to keep me entertained! I am 100% sure I have made the right choice, and it couldn't be clearer. The options open to me are massive, and im more than happy with the hardware.

Today is by far the most fun I have ever had researching games I have ignored, playing a little bit of each along the way, whilst learning how to emulate. It has been a blast! Even with the newer handheld launches having come out (Looking at you ROG) I AM SATISFIED - And I can rarely say this about a purchase!

What's some games you guys can recommend that I emulate that I may have missed out on (after I buy them of course ;)

I'd love to hear everyone's experience with the steam deck so far and what they love the most about it too!

I've had my Steam Deck for about a week, and it's honestly driving me crazy.

Every day, when I turn it on in the evening (I shut it down completely every morning), Steam starts downloading shader cache updates for almost all of my games. This happens daily, even for older games that haven't been updated at all. There's no game update, no system update, nothing that would explain it.

The worst part is how slow these downloads are, around 5 Mbit/s (regular downloads are much faster) so I end up waiting a long time before I can play. For example, Overwatch 2 consistently gets a shader cache update of around 2.1 to 2.3 GB, and just that alone takes almost an hour to download. And this happens every single day.

I'm not using a microSD card, either. I'm running everything from the Deck's original internal 1 TB SSD, so it shouldn't be a slow storage issue either.

I understand what shader pre-caching is for, but this behavior just seems broken. It feels like Steam or the Deck keeps resetting or invalidating the cache constantly for no reason.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix? I'm seriously considering disabling shader pre-caching just to stop this nonsense.

If Valve are waiting for a generational leap in graphics before making the Steam Deck 2, what do you think that'll actually look like?

The Steam Deck worked so well because no major company had ever made PC handheld at scale, but now it seems everyone is on board with their own PC handhelds with more power than the Deck, including Xbox.

I don't think Valve can pull off another generational leap through horsepower alone. Maybe if the leaks and rumours of their x86 to ARM translation layer is true, their next generational leap will be a hyper efficient Steam Deck that runs on ARM?

Idk. It's a bit disheartening to see the Steam Deck is being left behind a bit...

I’ve recently bought a steam deck oled and I know it’s really good for indie games but I don’t really have a lot of indie games in my steam library as I normally play a lot of triple A or double A games on my main PC. This might seem like an odd question but it’s my first post here (or Reddit in general) so please bare with me, but what are some games (Indie, Triple A, Double A) that feel like they were made to be played on the steam deck?

•Previously Enjoyed Games: Prey, Atomic Heart, Lies of P, every souls game on Steam, Resident Evil 2,3,7 and 8, Black Myth Wukong, God of War

•Preferred genres: as you can probably tell is mainly single player action adventure games or souls-like games.

•Budget: I have no specific budget but obviously the cheaper the better

•Other Notes: I would like that the game run at 60 fps (or close such as 40 or 45 fps) and have proper controller optimization

As I mentioned before this might be a fairly dumb question or niche question but I’m really wanting to pick up a game that just runs smoothly out of the box on the steam deck since I am traveling to another country soon to visit family and I will be using my steam deck often.

Due to the high volume of very similar posts asking what r/SteamDeck users were playing, this weekly megathread has been created to have a singular place to hold this very frequent discussion and limit duplicate posts. Feel free to share what you have been playing on your Steam Deck or even post pictures in this thread and show us if you wish!

I got my Steam Deck two days ago, and I was seriously torn between it and the ROG Ally. What tipped the scales for me was the trackpads—and wow, I’m so glad I trusted that instinct! They work exactly how you'd hope, and then some.

I used to go back and forth between playing Stardew Valley on PC for the easy watering with mouse and on Switch for the portability. Now, I get the best of both worlds. The Deck's trackpads make the controls so much more versatile without giving up mobility.

Same with Minecraft. Using a controller is great for moving around and building, but managing the inventory is a nightmare. With the trackpads? It just works. Quick, smooth, and precise.

And it doesn’t stop there—point-and-click games, visual novels, anything where you’d normally need a mouse or touchscreen. I used to find it annoying to reach up and tap the screen, but with the trackpads, I barely need to. They’re that good.

If you're considering a handheld, the Steam Deck's trackpads made it the obvious choice for me. I honestly can’t imagine using a handheld without them now.

Do you have a moment when the trackpads "clicked" for you? I'd love to hear how others are using them!
