Two weekends ago I upgraded my Ubuntu desktop from 22.04 to 24.04.3 and was left with an unusable system because I opted to keep my existing copy of the gdm-smartcard-pkcs11-exclusive configuration file because I don't use a smartcard.

But it's a new configuration file and is REQUIRED. By saying I didn't want it updated, the update program didn't create the new one. And since there wasn't an old one, the upgrade failed with "error: alternative path /etc/pam.d/gdm-smartcard-pkcs11-exclusive doesn’t exist" and "The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state." Oh, it certainly was.

It might as well have said, "Enter N if you want your system to become unusable."

The upgrade program should never have asked. If the file is required and it isn't there, it should have just created it. I think it's a bug in the update program.

gdm3, ubuntu-desktop, and ubuntu-desktop-minimal weren't installed. PAM was not set up. No way to log in.

Some interesting ubuntu news regarding Wayland and gnome. Personally, as a gnome user I am fairly happy with this. Been using Wayland for quite a while now and haven't had any real issues with it!

Besides having the latest version available, what do Ubuntu users who run MariaDB wish to see in future versions of MariaDB, or how it is integrated and packaged in Ubuntu?

As described in this AskUbuntu post, basically every time there's some audio playback, there is a variable delay when the audio starts. It can range from anything like a fraction of a second to a full two seconds.

I noticed this first when playing YouTube videos and then it was excruciatingly obvious and a real problem while editing audio in Audacity.

If it's any good, I'm still under X, not Wayland, and using Pulse Audio.

My audio is going to my HDMI connected monitor where my speakers are connected.

This is only happening since I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 24.04 earlier this September.

I've installed Ubuntu 24.04 on my original MS Surface Pro tablet and it works very well except for a few flaws here and there. I've heard KDE Plasma has better touchscreen support and features so I decided to give it a whirl using a live USB key.

So far so good, but there's only one really crucial part that I'm missing: an on screen virtual keybaord. This doesn't even come out of the box with the distro?

SO far I've tried onboard but the damn thing segfaults seconds after being opened.

Do you have any recommendations for on screen virtual keyboards in KDE Plasma? Preferably something QT based that integrates well with KDE.

I've always disabled that feature since it doesn't play nice with Linux and it seemed complicated for no real benefit.

Have any of you tried installing Ubuntu with secure boot? Is it complicated? What's the process like?
