There's a new kew version out, v3.4, which adds a landscape mode. kew is an open source music player which runs in the terminal. I founded it, ask me anything you want.

To play music in kew you could for instance run: kew nirvana (will play all nirvana songs) kew neverm (will play nevermind album)

Just typing kew shows you your music library.

I have yet to customize my i3 config on my fedora install on this macbook. I hesitate because my debian install just vanished, causing me to thik the SSD is failing. This when i installed fedora on this afterwards -- i'd hate to put so much work in just to randomly lose it. What do you guys think?

Decided to mess around with CachyOS on my laptop since I've seen a ton of people trying it out. There's some things I'd like to fix but I'm still learning :)

After daily driving Trinity for since forever i recently felt the urge to try something more... basic.

  • Motif Window Manger
  • Firefox with "IRIXesqe" theme
  • Xfe filemanager
  • xclock, xbiff (i am using a fetchmail -> procmail -> mutt setup)
  • Bog standard xterm

Everything is as lightweight as it gets to keep things "snappy".

I found that Wayland had a serious lack of what I liked, which is manual tiling. Sure there is Cagebreak but it doesn't support layer shell so no panels, notifications, or even wallpaper. Forked from Cagebreak and inspired by both Cagebreak and Herbstluftwm I wanted to have a frame based manual tiler WITH layer shell, xwayland, relative pointer and pointer constraint support thus NEDM.

It's by no means in a daily driver state. heres a video of it in action: http://andmc.ca/mov/nedm.mp4

I'm a huge CLI/TUI user. if I can find something and run it via the terminal, i'll opt for the germinal over a GUI every time. With Mastodon I noticed there were only a couple options and one of which was pretty much orphaned so I decided to build my own.

It's not done, still adding features, but the prime basic functionality is there. you can post, you can reply, you can search, look at peoples profiles, open images and links. you have options for home, local, and fedi timelines. you can view threads.

just wanted to share https://codeberg.org/rozodru/mastui

edit: I've moved to codeberg so all updates will be there now.

Nord Watchdogs themed Rice. I've been hooked on modded Watch Dogs 1. Perfect blend of hacking, noir and John Wick. Hyprland is comfy. Next stop might be Niri.

When I set out to completely scrap my default Cinnamon-on-Linux-Mint experience, I decided I wanted something that felt like a fictional OS from a video game, like you'd sit down at someone's computer and see some BS operating system that you'd kind of understand but it definitely doesn't resemble much of what's real.

So:

Linux Mint 21.3, running Cinnamon. The dock on the left is Plank Reloaded, and the top panel is just a Cinnamon panel, with left-formatted date cause I haven't seen a major OS put stuff like that up in the corner. Both dock and panel intelligently autohide and are a dream to use. The little turtle emoji pops a somewhat custom applications menu, accessible with the Super key, both on dock and panel.

The system font across all elements is Inter, the most beautiful display font I've ever seen: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Inter, and it just brings a certain elegance that the stock Ubuntu font is sorely lacking.

The theme is Semabe Grey Glassy, with the transparency tuned quite a bit for my personal taste, the mouse is Future-Cyan-Cursors, the dock icons are Mint-Y-Dark-Pink but with a modification for the turtle emoji, and the Linux Mint boot logo has been swapped out for you-know-exactly-what. The wallpaper is a moderately edited asset rip from Life is Strange: Double Exposure, and that blep turtle I fell in love with was as a mural on a wall in a bar, and since there's no clean photo mode, I could prolly just go find it (and I did!).

I hope you enjoyed looking at and hearing about my semi-fictitious TurtleOS!

I was planning on having a gruvbox-ish red color as the window border, however at the moment I had to settle for this color because the GTK theme I'm using has a weird focus ring of its own and I'm yet to figure out how to get rid of it.

So I've been in the WM space for a little while. Started messing around with i3 some years ago, and stuck with the basic config. Same thing for Sway, before I attempted to make my own rice, and then stole the legendary Hyprdots. I remember messing with the dots and trying to change things, and getting frustrated because it obviously was above my knowledge level. I went back to KDE for a little bit, before Brodie made a video and I was curious enough to take the leap. In short, it's crazy. It may seem odd at first, but the workflow is really hard to come back from. The freedom of space you are afforded makes even the smallest screen hyper productive. I tried going back to stacking layouts after this, but it felt incredibly cramped.

As for Niri itself, it comes with many comfortable features and works seamlessly out of the box in many ways that surprised me. It has a native overview, screenshot tool, most of the media keys were programmed, and even hitting my Laptop's power button only prompted a suspend instead of the usual instant shutdown.

I'm a simple man, who uses simple tools. My aim in making a rice isn't something super flashy, but something functional with dots I can build up then use for years with minimal tweaking. Most of my dots are just lightly modified or taken from elsewhere, but that matters little to me. I just want a functional productive, and comfortable environment to work and play. Mostly everything is done via the cli or similarly simple tools, as it helps me learn the system for future career possibilities, as well as provide peak productivity. I don't know how many will care for my tool list since everyone probably knows these things, but here it is just in case.

Term - Kitty

Shell - Fish

Bar - Waybar

Menu / App Launcher - Fuzzel

Notifications Daemon - Mako

File Manager - Yazi + A boat load of plugins (Can provide list if asked)

System Monitor - Btop

Music Player - MPD + RMPC

Browser - Qutebrowser

Recording Software - wf-recorder

TUI-Wiki - Wikiman

"Notes" - Vim

I plan to revamp it and make better scripts as time goes on, but I am very satisfied for now.

Tldr; Niri fucks and you should play Rockman (Particularly the fan retranslations, the original English localizations are dookie)

I hope you enjoyed the showcase :>
