Why is all the news from UK sounding like the US suddenly?

[–] ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

We probably have the most native English-speaking morons than the rest of the world combined. I’d like to think we just gave the world cool movies and blues/soul records but we gave the world a bunch of dumbasses too. It hits England first.

I guess it hits Canada first and England second. And include rap in our contributions to world culture. And jeans and microprocessors and other unimportant shit.

What did the Romans ever do for us?

[–] ProfAel@feddit.org -2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

To be fair, the US only turned out the way it did, because of a bunch of imperialistic European countries (or governments).

The US has been an independent nation for almost 250 years. At some point they have to start taking responsibility for their own actions

[–] ProfAel@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Great point. They definitely should take responsibility. I just want to keep the history of imperialism in mind. I don't want to excuse the US at all.

Anything on social media or news gets shared here. Most of our media is biased and owned by the ruling / capitalist class. This is not new at all (see: Brexit and Nigel Farage).

However, in reality there are multiple LTNs across cities in the country, especially in London. They are generally well accepted by local people but they aren't very vocal about it. I think most of the cities have charges to drive in for higher emission cars. They're here to stay but doesn't make a good headline that they continue on.

Even in my heavily pro-car, suburban area, roads are finally being dropped to 20mph and they're introducing school roads / other restrictions. There's long term plans to reduce roads and introduce more cycle lanes (several years behind London Boroughs but going in the right direction...)
