Why are passports still a booklet? Everything is digital now. We don’t need stamps or visas in the passport anymore. It serves no purpose.

I just want it to be wallet sized and tear/water resistant, so like a typical plastic ID card.
The US has a passport card option, but it's only applicable to US, Mexico, Caribbean and Canada.
Here's a comparison. The card is so practical, it should be standard by now.
My SIN card shouldn't still be paper either but governments don't care.
In Europe there is a credit card sized identity card which is valid in the EU and EFTA.
