Agreed. I don't know many women who don't cry for greater safety on the road (men share this logic, but I do find the bias of safety falls to a greater amount of women), and buy an SUV just to keep up with the trend of larger vehicles on the road so they don't get demolished in an accident.

I do like this permitting system idea, maybe somewhere where you have to apply to be approved for the class of vehicle like suv, pickup truck, sedan, etc. . . Like maybe a need to justify why the extra energy and size is needed, but now we are in a situation where millions of vehicles already are on the road, so maybe a tax or new requirement would have to come into effect.

so they don't get demolished in an accident.

You know what would really help with that. Regulate freight to trains. Semi routes should be a low, limited distance.

This also saves more than half of our road maintenance costs, which are enormous. Semis destroy roads much, much faster than smaller vehicles.

Or just stop buying so much useless crap.

I'm not counting on that.

Hear hear. I think there are some valid reasons to want a pick up or SUV (crossovers included) but I think a vast majority of people would be plenty happy with a hatchback. My Golf and my roommate's Prius carry more than the larger sedans I've owned and take up less space on the road, in lots, etc., and use less gas. Heck, a Smart Car or Fiat would accomplish most of my car related goals, but I'd die if any larger vehicle hit me.

Also, selfishly, would love a resurgence of the hot hatch.

Yes please. My 2006 TDI is getting old but there's nothing similar on the market.

Our Honda Fit fit larger stuff in it than our friends Dodge SUV. The floor in the rear was so high it makes the opening small. Meanwhile in the Fit we brought home a table and 3 of the ikea Tullsta bucket chairs ( they aren't flat pack ), maybe could have squeezed the 4th in the passenger seat, but you would lose visibility out the window.
