I didn’t like Windows 10 and I am absolutely hating Windows 11. The only reason I keep a Windows laptop is because my favourite game is Windows only.

But I am cursing the Microsoft monopoly.

Long sweary rantTrying to do something simple is a massive fuck around, accidentally ghosting near some dumb shit button brings up a news popup that covers most of your screen and you have to fumble around to dismiss, it kidnaps your files into the cloud to extort payment for more storage and makes it hard to reclaim them (if you don’t do things right they can get put back into cloud when you sever the OneDrive connection to your computer to disable that), obscures the settings to back up to drive instead of cloud, and trying to search your computer for something takes you to fucking Bing.

Forget about simple games like Solitaire, even as of Windows 7 they’re gamified and enshittified out the arse with sounds you cannot disable even through the system, and constantly pushing to upgrade to premium to stop the ads.

There’s also AI and the increased amount of corporate spyware including screenshotting all your stuff (including potentially sensitive information).

And the fact that (the latest?) Windows 11 can possibly wipe your SSD once it reaches 60% full. (Which is why I’m hurriedly backing up now, especially as the computer contains stuff I’ve been desperately pulling off cloud before I potentially lose access due to age verification bullshit.)

I really hope something happens and the monopoly collapses. Fuck them for all the shady shit they pulled for so long to make this the normal state of affairs.

And yes, I am objecting way too late. I knew it was a good idea to not use Windows and not rely on cloud. I just literally haven’t had a chance to prioritise sorting it out. I’m still not really getting to focus on it right now and tech cunts continue messing up yet more shit to add to the pile of things to address. Move fast and break shit… I’ma move fast and break your shit.

If I knew everything I needed would work without prolonged wrestling and troubleshooting that would probably never get finished (and that others would be able to open the documents I send) I’d be maining Linux or some other alternative already and have completely open source software.

I fucking hate itunes/music so much for the way they "remove" files they don't want you to have by renaming them and reformat photo files

and their tv app sucks so bad

but damn they support such good television production and they pretty much give the producers/writers free rein

microsoft , you still have choices, you can choose to not use microsoft

and choose not to play games on line, you can use a pack of real cards if you choose

reminds me, i have to find the unsubscribe button for epic games, they are annoying me

It’s not that easy to just choose not to use something. (I wish it were.) That’s the monopoly.

It’s going to be so hard to disentangle everything especially when already overwhelmed with other life admin. I have no idea if I even can degoogle or deMicrosoft because it’s such a large complex organisational task and risks me not being able to do things I need to.

I know right now I’m probably not going to be able to play favourite online games if I can’t get them to work in Linux.

And the files I tried sending from a non Windows computer (Mac) aren’t able to be opened on the other end. Kind of important when communicating with organisations.

I think what I’m going to do is break it down in steps.

I have to grab back all my pictures and files from the cloud to local storage before a deadline, I’ve got them off One Drive into a differently named folder so it can’t yoink it back but this computer is getting really full. It won’t handle more from other online storage.

So I’ll back up my old desktop.

Install whatever Linux that has a legit iso.

Then get everything onto there.

Then when there’s time I can try to use Wine or whatever to see if I can get my games working. (These can’t be replaced by a pack of cards and I don’t have the ability or wish to join a tabletop gaming group.)

I strongly recommend Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition, I've been exclusively using Linux distros for years, Mint is the only one that for me just works how I want out of the box and stays working.

I was trying to sha the Cinnamon iso and none of the numbers matched for any of them despite trying different mirrors.

I might have to give up and try a different one
