World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
- Blogsites are treated in the same manner as social media sites. Medium, Blogger, Substack, etc. are not valid news links regardless of who is posting them. Yes, legitimate news sites use Blogging platforms, they also use Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube and we don't allow those links either.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

What do you mean by "their Western peers back home"? Are you suggesting Israelis are Westerners and not Middle Easterners?
they are. israelis are European colonials whose claim to the Levant is tied to a diasporatic exodus during the late roman empire. Palestinians are indigenous to the Levant, just like the israeli colonists' ancestors from 1200 years ago. however, the Jews that spent their time in Europe, the Ashkenazi, that dominate israeli settler politics have been disconnected from the Levant for so long and integrated into European society so deeply as a means of survival that their claims to be the rightful heirs to the Levant no longer make sense without needing to erase the history of the Palestinians, many of whom themselves maintain Jewish cultural traditions the Ashkenazi lost.
so they erase the Palestinians and their stories, just like the Europeans they've been around for the last couple millennia did to them. if you truly believe that israelis are from the near east, plain and simple, then there are significant chunks of your understanding of history that are either missing or are outright russian/German/israeli fabrications. i suggest you spend some time reading about the history of my people over the last 200 years to understand that Zionism and the current israeli state are a reactionary response to antisemitic violence in Europe in the late 1800s, and that Zionism is not a universal approach to Jewish identity with the other response to that violence being a philosophy known as doikayt. while you're reading, too, focus on non European perspectives on what Palestinians call the Nakba, or tragedy. It's the loss of their ancestral homelands that they've been on for 20k years to Europeans claiming to be from there.
but if you don't, then please take the following truth with you: the Likud is a white supremecist European colonial project, just like the united states and manifest destiny, or russia's subjugation of minority peoples across their Asian territory.
That's a massive post that could have been more effectively summed up as "Yes Im that racist and I know fuckall about history"
Factually the majority of Israelis are from Middle Eastern nations whose relatives were expelled when Israel was created so it is factually inaccurate to suggest that Israelis are Europeans when the above covers roughly 55% of the population.
Some Palestinians might have ancestry with the original native groups but we would have noway of being able to determine this. We factually do know that there was significant Arab migration into the area at various points and the modern population is related to these Arabs. To be clear there is no "native" population to the Levant that can be proven in any way right now.
While I agree Likhud is racist and largely counterproductive you have so many overtly factual errors in addition to the overt racism it is difficult for me to take you serious at all.

It is true that much of the Israeli population is middle eastern. However the political of Israel has been European from it's founding until today.
(which is what we were talking about until they shifted the goalposts to mean all Jews living within Israeli controlled territory)
Ikr? All these Germanic and Eastern European "Semites". 🤣
Btw I should've just said "European peers (Americans included, ofc)" but somehow I can't correct my previous post.
Mizrahi Jews are 54% of the population and the Ashkenazi and Sephardic populations are still Jewish people.
Unless you are so fucking racist that you think "Semite" is a skin tone your reply makes zero sense.
100-54=46 46<50 so not half.
Most Jewish people did not have last names they got them after the migration into Eastern Europe. Many have European last names due to the history of European antisemitism. The fact that you bring this up as something these people chose, rather than it being forced on them as was typically the case, really highlights how poor your understanding isof the history of Jews in Europe.
No one is paying me I just speak out against overt racism when I see it. You are racist, bad at math and have a shit grasp on history. Do you want a ladder to get out if that hole you keep digging? I'd be perfectly fine with you self creating an oubliette.
You are suggesting that the Jewish population of Europe isn't Middle Eastern in their origins. That's overtly false and a common racist claim.
If you don't want to be called out then don't give anyone a reason.
hey. could you stop peddling the racist horseshit that European Jews aren't European and claiming that you're the antiracist one for it? no one is claiming that the Ashkenazi or Sephardic Jews don't have ties back to the Levant. but it was a popular antisemitic propaganda angle to claim that we had no ties and no home in Europe, so ethnically cleansing us was totally fine and cool.
I never said they weren't European but framing it as "Europeans killing Europeans is inaccurate"
who said anything about europeans killing europeans? what are you talking about? we're talking about a colonial settler state ethnically cleansing an indigenous population. and the settler state's politics a dominated by white europeans, and the indiginous population is made up of jews, muslims, christians, and non practicing secular people. what you said doesn't relate to what you're saying it does in any way that makes sense to anyone else, and then when we try to explain that it doesn't make sense you call us racist and then say some of the most racist stuff i've seen in a while.
