Okay, that would be weird, but I can see someone doing it. Do those two pieces of stainless just hook into the boltrope slot? If so, then yes, I think you are correct.
@Amgine @sailing It seems they do, yes. In hindsight I should have tried to see if they were easy to unclip. (That would be my expectation, and would simplify repairs if so.)

That will certainly make it easier to repair, or remove, if it works that way. Another way it may work is as a sort of shim, sliding into the bolt rope slot and with thinned edges - but that will likely require removing the boom from the gooseneck to remove it.
@Amgine @sailing uh oh. That would be "cut the strap and screw a proper bail or weld an attachment point in its place" territory, IMHO.
@Amgine @sailing I've found an ebay listing that looks like a similar concept: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/236334628939?%5C_skw=catalina+boom+vang&itmmeta=01K6CEX6XYF23CQDKVANXGTQS1&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA0FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1dHy4sHKQwoI00vJCbgz3lp73UBQDuMvxWsgWOOKSYCIHLrrQd86N4l3wXhsBBRtKedYB47le9g8Zr%2FnDwq%2BdI2YPhPO7WQClDIXdaUd4MDdhm1cuAicpe4z1tVrfTNmp388ZEGMzt1jAe2oTA4spD8xCa05iWUUrFDXdDJynEZGLFaMIX93Dg9cLNsdIe45d8bUOSIwq6NgZ9jS2oSWB3Ld1Gsaig87kXrpP2wYw0mvv2iXMwy9Gv9meBdbct%2Bqfs%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR47v9I6zZg

Now I am super curious, but I am on the mainland at the moment so I cannot drive down to see it...
