I think his overarching point is true, but it's not as if Channel 4 has attempted to seriously elevate content in the last 5-10 years. I also don't think its responsible for Channel 4 (or terrestrial TV's relative decline either).
It didn't seem like he was suggesting that broadcasters needed to elevate their content. Only that he was incredulous that people prefer YouTube which he believes is less intellectually engaging.
Well a lot is, but certainly not all of Youtube.
