Update 2: Another one at the moment, so site is slow. :)

Update: Another 30000 bots joined the party, so cpu usage is high at the moment. Site is slower than normal.

Appearently about 17500 bots are attempting to slow down our instance and eating bandwidth by grabbing the same files over and over.

They are banned for now but its an ongoing battle against these guys. Just wanted to let you know in case you notice worse performance. :)

At least we are distributed on lemmy, so they will have a hard time taking us all down for a long time. :)

We all know that, and they've probably figured that out by now, but they'll keep trying. When you've got the resources of an entire government behind you, there's not much you can't accomplish, given enough effort.

Good luck on holding them back, we're on your side.

Thats true. I hope governments are not out to shut down the lemmy network. Its just a tiny amount of people who enjoy this stuff anyway.

Lemmy reminds me of Reddit, when I joined over a dozen years ago. Nobody had heard of it back then. Then it grew, I accumulated nearly a million Karma, then I was permabanned after Trump's inauguration, for posting a statement Id made many times without so much as a warning.

10 years from now, when MAGA has captured Reddit, and every other broadcast network, every newspaper, etc., and Lemmy is all that's left, it won't be tiny anymore.

It doesn't take much on reddit, they half there already, palintir bots made it too obvious

Trumps 1st term when people started getting banned in large numbers, and it snowballed from there.

I survived the first term, but in February 2025, right after the Inauguration, The Goblin had a meeting with Spez, and Reddit cowardly permabanned thousands, perhaps millions, of veteran accounts, and totally destroyed the platform.

With all the experienced posters gone, all that's left are the lurkers and bots and MAGA propagandists.

Musk did pressure spez, whom spez is in love with. to make 2 waves of purges, and it just snowballed from there. this allowed the likes palintir bots to appear as well. and i think reddit is mostly going after the small fry: OF accounts, and link droppers to thier site. allegedly im hearing they have upped thier detection methods against the evaders that are using methods to hide thier methods. The propaganda bots dont care about evading, they can just create hundreds and thousands more, so they are in plain sight, its about "flooding the zone"

Yeah, I just wish there was more discussions about different interests, like on reddit.

For example, as a nerd, i use neovim a lot. But there is no community here that posts about new plugins and new features, no discussions how to do certain things. Reddit is still the go-to source for those things. I would love if that could change, but the majority of users are still on that reddit place... :P

I know exactly what you mean. I miss the guitar communities they have over there.
