Update 2: Another one at the moment, so site is slow. :)

Update: Another 30000 bots joined the party, so cpu usage is high at the moment. Site is slower than normal.

Appearently about 17500 bots are attempting to slow down our instance and eating bandwidth by grabbing the same files over and over.

They are banned for now but its an ongoing battle against these guys. Just wanted to let you know in case you notice worse performance. :)

That explains why I couldn't access this instance yesterday

[–] mrmanager@lemmy.today 1 points 18 hours ago

Yep even though its funny how they care about like 120 daily users of Lemmy on this instance. :)

Keep up the great work Mr. Manager!

Thats a bingo!

[–] Alice@hilariouschaos.com 7 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Why are they doing that.? Dumb question i know

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Foreign intelligence operations, just messing with our society.

I just read that the entire Cracker Barrel debacle was started by a bot swarm, that then got picked up by gullible MAGAs. The result was a corporation wasting millions of dollars on a trashed branding/marketing effort, and an unknown amount in lost business.

The entire point of the Russian and Chinese attacks on our country isn't any specific outcome, they just want us to fuck up our own country in as many ways as possible, and it is working extremely well.

[–] mrmanager@lemmy.today 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wish I knew. Maybe they dont like that we federate with all instances, including not popular ones. Maybe its because we blocked 16 million chinese ip addresses last week because they had tons of bots scraping the instance.

Just trying to run a small instance with good performance over here. :)

At least one objective is certainly just probing the borders, nooks and crannies of the entire system, and figuring out where they can break in and exploit whatever they can.

They've been really successful in ruining Reddit, and they've identified Lemmy as the obvious successor, so they'll be targeting us next. They'll either capture us, and turn it into another mouthpiece for the Conservative Propaganda Machine, or just destroy it.

[–] mrmanager@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

At least we are distributed on lemmy, so they will have a hard time taking us all down for a long time. :)

We all know that, and they've probably figured that out by now, but they'll keep trying. When you've got the resources of an entire government behind you, there's not much you can't accomplish, given enough effort.

Good luck on holding them back, we're on your side.

[–] mrmanager@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thats true. I hope governments are not out to shut down the lemmy network. Its just a tiny amount of people who enjoy this stuff anyway.

Lemmy reminds me of Reddit, when I joined over a dozen years ago. Nobody had heard of it back then. Then it grew, I accumulated nearly a million Karma, then I was permabanned after Trump's inauguration, for posting a statement Id made many times without so much as a warning.

10 years from now, when MAGA has captured Reddit, and every other broadcast network, every newspaper, etc., and Lemmy is all that's left, it won't be tiny anymore.

It doesn't take much on reddit, they half there already, palintir bots made it too obvious

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Trumps 1st term when people started getting banned in large numbers, and it snowballed from there.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I survived the first term, but in February 2025, right after the Inauguration, The Goblin had a meeting with Spez, and Reddit cowardly permabanned thousands, perhaps millions, of veteran accounts, and totally destroyed the platform.

With all the experienced posters gone, all that's left are the lurkers and bots and MAGA propagandists.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 40 minutes ago

Musk did pressure spez, whom spez is in love with. to make 2 waves of purges, and it just snowballed from there. this allowed the likes palintir bots to appear as well. and i think reddit is mostly going after the small fry: OF accounts, and link droppers to thier site. allegedly im hearing they have upped thier detection methods against the evaders that are using methods to hide thier methods. The propaganda bots dont care about evading, they can just create hundreds and thousands more, so they are in plain sight, its about "flooding the zone"

[–] mrmanager@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, I just wish there was more discussions about different interests, like on reddit.

For example, as a nerd, i use neovim a lot. But there is no community here that posts about new plugins and new features, no discussions how to do certain things. Reddit is still the go-to source for those things. I would love if that could change, but the majority of users are still on that reddit place... :P

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

I know exactly what you mean. I miss the guitar communities they have over there.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Maybe just AI crawlers? Or the fact that the instance hosts some conservative content, which is not going well with many lemmings

[–] mrmanager@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah could be. There is a trend right now on social media where people think they need to push down and try to remove opinions they dont agree with.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 19 hours ago

Right now , far right wing needs some whitewashing so they have to spread around

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Seeing this stuff freaks me out over the coming Orwellian state that will crush all free thought (in discussion boards like these, by shutting them down) through the might of its resources.

I hope the defense is sustainable. Thanks for what you do.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Keep your Critical Thinking Skills sharp, and teach your children, relatives, and friends. Critical Thinking is the best defense against the Conservative Propaganda Machine.

I think we are already there in some ways. But maybe more similar to Brave New World than 1984. People being unhappy but using things like media streaming and social media to get relief from the daily grind.

Endorphins released by doom scrolling is the new Soma.

When do I get the soma to make it all more bearable?
