You see that strong steel and the thick, supported viewing area there, millionaire dumbass? That’s why your bathosphere was never supposed to be built and everyone kept telling you you were gonna die in it.

I highly recommend Solar Eclipse Timer on YouTube if you want to understand the details of this disaster. Largely based on sworn testimony taken at the Coast Guard board of inquiry.

  • Boeing recommended no less than 8 inches of carbon fiber on their final design study. Ocean gate went with 5.
  • There was a civilian engineer that the Navy had employed for an entire 30-40 year career to research submersible window design. This guy had written pretty much the only book on submersible windows, and he had published mountains of empirical test data that cannot be economically reproduced anywhere else. OceanGate ignored everything this guy had to say and went with a window shape that was known to be weaker than standard.
  • A lot of people don't know or don't realize that despite all of the BS, Titan made 13 successful trips to the Titanic.
  • OceanGate rigged electronic strain gauges into the hull. One of their few good ideas. On the next-to-last dive, at the very end, right before the sub resurfaced, there was a loud boom or crack that everyone on board heard. The strain gauges showed a step discontinuity at the same time as the boom, that did not recover. A clear sign of plastic deformation and yield. Stockton Rush knew about this, but he still got back in the sub for that next trip.
