Use something like signal instead.
Until the government demands that Signal turns over the keys too.
Not really possible, Signal doesn't have the keys to turn over. Governments only option is to ban Signal.

Signal really doesn’t have all the features Discord has though.
That's why you use Discord for friendly chats, and Signal as a side channel for anything political.
Yeah I use both to be clear. I just don’t see them as alternatives to one another.
Though I do use discord for some political stuff. I like to do legal resistance in public to normalize it and reduce the fear. That’s how they control us.
Signal is for more confidential stuff :)

You might as well say why use Lemmy when Signal exists. It’s just not a replacement.
Haven’t used matrix though. Is it encrypted? Does it have the forum functionality of Discord?

It's more-or-less a self-hostable Discord clone (but there are plenty of public instances you can join).
There are also Matrix bridges that let you join chats on other apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc.
Still waiting for Stoat (aka Revolt) to kick in because Matrix is too complex to bring my friends over, and also lacks cool Discord features like bots

Like Lara from Discord I guess? I don't know any other type of music bot, but I want something that plays music from a specific streaming site with a command

Some of them are actually frameworks for building bots (maubot) and so they also list more curated bots: https://plugins.mau.bot/
There are also plenty others floating around out there on GitHub etc.

Yes, Discords features are needed for managing large groups. But for playing games with a small friend group none of the more advanced features are really necessary.
