What are you gaining by coupling them instead series? Are you trying to obtain higher accelerations? Never really heard of two motors before.
As long as the steppers have their steps in sync, I think it should work. If the step positions are out of sync even half a degree you'll be seeing motor heating and poor performance as the motors try to fight each other into position. But I feel like you won't see as much speed benefit as you think since you'll run out of belt tension and rail stiffness, causing unwanted vibrations and oscillation at higher acceleration.
This. At least on my printer the single X and Y steppers seem pretty fast. I fail to see how additional steppers would make for much of an improvement.
"Standard" steppers are pretty strong, and the main issue is how you switch coils back and forth until it's at top speed, and that will not be helped by adding more steppers.
I'm thinking torque rather than speed. I have converted an Ender 5 Plus to Hybrid core Y, with the Endorphin mod and I'm mulling adding an extra stepper on the X, and increasing power on the Y, either with a larger Y dual shaft or adding an extra stepper on the Y in series.
