So, if Airi is some kind of companion bot, why does she need to both eat and breathe? Her nature is maddeningly ambiguous.

She seems to get her energy from eating a she is shown to get hungry.

Yeah, but how? Food isn't a very efficient energy source if you're breaking it down by something other than biological methods. They'd get better mileage out of hooking her up to the solar panels along with the bike (or, if whatever hypothetical system she's using is more efficient than solar, why doesn't the bike run on it too?). And why would she need to breathe?

. . . Maybe I'm putting more thought into this than the original mangaka did.
