Should I play the first first or is starting with this one ok?

I used to be very anti-card game but Inscryption was very fun and I'm trying to branch out to some stuff outside of my comfort zone. Any other recommendations for card games?

Not related to STS2 or this topic, but if you really enjoyed Inscryption, I stroooongly urge you to play Daniel Mullins’ other big game, “The Hex.” I went in blind on the advice of someone when I was back on Reddit. They told me

“Don’t watch the trailer, don’t read anything, the weird graphics in the screenshots will make sense like a half hour in. It’s so cheap but it’s an incredible game.”

I picked it up, started it with my partner, and we marathoned it in a couple days. We could have gone faster but we took our sweet time, there were MULTPLE mind-blowing moments for us, and it has ties to the Inscryption world, too. Like nobody has played it compared to Inscryption and I find that insane. I started with Inscryption and loved it, it’s got more replay value than The Hex, but overall I think I’d rate The Hex a tad higher in overall game quality. It’s so… I can’t say anything more without spoiling stuff. Go in blind, it’s worth it!

If you or anyone else reading this heeds my advice, PLEASE let me know what you think of the game once you’re… like, into the game a bit and “get it.”

The Hex and “The Forgotten City” (a game NOT by Daniel Mullins) are two games I went into completely blind, wouldn’t have it any other way, and wish above all other games I could experience again with no memory of the games.

Please go play the Hex, everyone who liked Inscryption! (Also Danial has another game coming out this year or next and I am UNREASONABLY hyped and I don’t ever get hyped for any games ever anymore)

As a mechanical game sts(1+2) is superior to inscryption, however do not expect any kind of narrative driven gameplay, gameplay element changes, or real interaction with the opposite side other than fighting.

I really really enjoyed inscryption, but I only played it through once. I currently have around 20 hours in sts2 and I have no idea how much in 1.

All of that being said, I do think that you can get the feel of a puzzler from slay the spire, at least in its most intense moments. Trying to find the right solution to survive. If you enjoyed the card based elements of inscryption, you will enjoy slay the spire.

Also, just skip to 2 instead of playing one. If you have any friends that like the series, try the coop too! It's really fun and well done.

Edit: I seen you asked for other recommendations, and I would suggest monster train 2. Again, no real story so it doesn't matter that you're picking it up at 2.

Unfortunately inscryption is pretty unique in the genre, which is what made it so great.

I will definitely give those a try. I know that Slay the Spire has been lionized as one of the best card games I just have always hesitated to try it for some reason. But now that 2 is out I'll definitely be picking it up. Monster Train I am not super familiar with but I will check it out.

Monster Train was fantastic and Monster Train 2 is even better. I love the challenge modes and the new hellspawn.

God, Inscryption was so good!

[–] afromustache@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah the vibes with Inscryption were just...like it was a card game but I felt legitimately unnerved. The music and the sound effects made me viscerally uncomfortable, and then the way Leshy watched you when you walked around the cabin was creepy as shit.

It kind of opened my eyes to card games in general and (not that I didn't already know this from games like Disco Elysium, Subnautica, Soma, Outer Wilds, etc.) The fact that smaller budget titles often time were significantly more worthwhile than AAA stuff.

[–] LucidNightmare@anarchist.nexus 3 points 16 hours ago

Exactly. I was never into card games until I played Inscryption. It just clicked so well. I made it through the story and now about every month or so I will boot up Kaycee’s Mod to do a few playthroughs!

I would’ve never played Balatro if it wasn’t for Inscryption. :)

Sts2 ,in every conceivable way, supersedes its predecessor , rendering it obsolete.

There’s minimal story, so you’re not missing anything.

Just jump in and play.

[–] WillFord27@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Not disagreeing, but it's hard to imagine a masterpiece of a game being rendered obsolete. There's beauty in its deceptive simplicity, the game really was exactly what it set out to be. For example, there's a large chunk of the Minecraft playerbase that would argue prerelease is the superior version of the game. There's clarity and refinement in less.

[–] afromustache@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

It's kind of like (and this is obviously a departure from the card game genre) Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is considered the ultimate game of the franchise despite their being several proceding iterations after it. I'm even a huge fan of the 2nd one despite it being significantly more minimal. Something about the 2d sprites and was very charming.

That said, Slay the Spire regularly goes on sale for like 90% off. You can pick the game up for under $3.
