Semitic is a linguistic term, not an ethnic one.

The sons of Shem shared the land with the Caananites (sons of Ham (also Noah's son), though like Indians who never heard of India, their fellow Levant/Sumerian decendant tribes never heard of Caanan or Ham) and had extremely similar language to Hebrew. They shared the same god that Abraham named his IsraELite children, that Moses would later tell us that (no god before me) Yahweh had demonically impersonated, where Yahweh was one of 70 sons of El.

So Semite, is either just the Israelite descendants of Shem/Abraham, or the entirety of the Levant/Mesopotamia people if language based. The Ashkenazi are none of these, whether or not they went to Hebrew School.
