KSP mods let you do interplanetary resource extraction and logistics.

My current (its still current even though I haven't played in ages!) playthrough is using USI mods. Loads of resource extraction and refining options, can even build spaceships in orbit which I started doing a lot.

Currently far enough where I build most things in LKO but I still send up the majority of the materials for building it from the spaceport. Started using the WOLF system which allows resource extraction and refining with zero part count as things get janky with 1000 parts. Initially used it for mining only as it is quite a jump from dumb automining to manned operations for refining. Kerbin and Mun both have orbiting fuel stations that are constantly resupplied in the background.

Refining is currently very basic, when I next play that is probably what I should expand. Playing career though and this shits expensive. I am trying to avoid excessive time acceleration too as my manned rocket assembly requires food for everyone on board. Main source of income now is mining rare metals, next step is to refine them so that they take up less volume in my fairly limited logistic network and also increase the value per ton.

Expand more mining, more refining, more all the things! Oh yeah and a lot more logistics. Which requires flying the route you want that ship to take and then mass lost is the cost of that route. Using SSTOs and fuel stations all over the place means your routes are free to use and its just the initial vessel cost and time to set it up.

SO MANY things in the playthrough are like I need x but that needs more y first and to use it I need z. Rocket fuel is one of the simpler chains and even that took quite a bit. Mine raw material on mun - transport to mun orbit - transport to kerbin orbit - fuel refinery in kerbin orbit. As the network expands it helps having existing systems in place. Starting to look and think about minmus for resources.

No idea how long it would take to get interplanetary stuff going.
