It's a more expensive hobby in part because of all the tools, so if you can get them for free, that's awesome.
I wish I familiarized myself with kinds of leather and the processes for finishing edges before I got into it, so definitely check that out. Then just pick up some leather and try to follow a basic pattern to get the hang of it. Basic sewing skills are useful, too.
