I would think that they talked with the agent before making the deal, understood the deal Sweat would want, and that deal aligned with what the Bears are willing to pay before making the trade. That seems like it should be a common practice. frankly, if it wasn't done that way, it's gross incompetence on the Bears... which we can't rule out.
But I would imagine the deals of the extension come out later this week. At that point, I believe this becomes a very good trade for the Bears. If this doesn't happen, then the OP is spot on.
