It's just marketing for performance, or how fast/powerful each one is. M3 Max > M3 Pro > M3. The price increase is only worth it if you're doing something that requires more processing power. If you're just using a MacBook for basic things like browsing the web, reading the news, watching YouTube and Netflix, etc., the M3 is more than fine.

Though I would recommend splurging for the 16GB of Unified Memory. It'll let you do more things at once, and helps you future-proof a bit.
