As someone who has lived through many votes, I can tell you voting is good, but the system tends to corrupt a bit each iteration. When you realize, you're voting only two people that you wouldn't want to if you had a choice, but the choices you have are not your own. You're voting for two choices made somewhere else.
Voting all blue or all red is not a message strong enough when they're basically the same people playing ball at the top. Leaving the urns empty would be a brutal protest, a very loud message if they want to save face internationally.
