I don't give a shit if someone says merry Christmas to me, and I'll say it to people on Christmas/eve. It just makes more sense to say happy holidays earlier in December, since it includes Hanukkah, Christmas and new years. It makes me laugh when I tell someone "happy holidays" on December 5th, and they answer back with a smug "merry Christmas".
