Wouldn't there be a universal tendency for surnames to converge? But there are countertendencies like the addition of foreign surnames or not taking on your spouse's surname. As the article mentions, Japan forbids the latter.
Frankly, I'd rather take my spouse's surname than my own; I don't want to "continue the line." For me, it's not about that.
Now, I, err, just have to find my one true love... but that's besides the point!
