Russia has a fascinating and hilarious history of mobilizing state resources to create knockoffs of popular tech from elsewhere going back to post-WW2. Everything from radios, TVs and cameras, to the Space Shuttle.
What inevitably happens is they get like 50% of the product in good working order, find out it's hard, then inevitably do a "Fuck this, we do it our own way" and fuck up the last half, leaving a litany of laughable results for the rest of us to avoid.
